I vote for it, and if there is added costs for it, will pay for it. All my cameras are coming in with H.265 support, and it would reduce BW / Disk space.

The 5.x update was great BTW, Love the performance updates. Thank you!

While H265 encoding would be great, it does come with more complexity and load on the host CPU. What I am asking for is to be able to decode a H265 stream from the camera so I can use the highest bitrate possible and save on network bandwidth from several cameras. The decoding should not be too much for the CPU and to integrate into Sighthound. Please consider!

Don't have any cameras or software yet, but this solution looks to be the one I would want for accuracy.

I am looking to buy H265 cams which I assume will hardware encode the stream before it hits the nvr, but if SH doesn't support it I guess I would have to use AVC until it does. Seems to be a new major version each year so I'd need to be careful to buy the software within a year if the next version doesn't include support. Blue Iris already supports it but I don't think its as accurate as this package from what it looks like. So consider this a +1 for the feature.

I too am interested in H.265 support and have many cameras that would benefit from it.

+1 here too. There are some h.265 cameras that I am waiting to purchase until SH supports it.

+1 here too. have a new h.265 camera and looking to upgrade other cams to a 4K/h.265 based option
while the additional storage required is not an immediate issue it makes sense to use the latest standard if possible.

essentially all new camera models support h.265, the problem I find is that many are using modified versions to tweak the codec for security which means trouble for 3rd party apps (ie, sighthound). For instance, how do we expect them to support geovisions h.265+ codec? You have to install geovision's suite to get that and it doesn't work with normal h.265 decoders.

+1 for the request, though I understand the difficulty in doing this for these modified codecs.

I've recently updated my overall system when I switched my 9 cameras from 1080p to 4K. No way was my SH/Mac Mini solution going to handle that many 4K streams without choking. So now I run the 4K main streams to a new 4K NVR (H.265), and I run lower resolution (704x480) substreams (H.264) to the Mac Mini for SH to use (my Lorex 4K cameras allow different encoding for each stream). The benefits are that I always have the full 4K footage encoded to minimize bandwidth and storage space, while maintaining the superior SH detection capabilities. The substreams are high enough resolution for SH notification emails and quick, decent streaming too. The Mac Mini is much more responsive now!

So, perhaps someday SH could use two streams, simply recording the main stream (undecoded), and processing (decoding) a lower resolution stream for object detection rules. Would this reduce processor overhead?

Almost a year since the last post.

I run several Hikvision at 1080, and just placed an order for a Amcrest 4k.

Looks as if the new codec will reduce storage.

Any updates on incorporating this into sighthound now.

Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, we have no plans to add H.265 support in the next upcoming release of Sighthound Video which should be released later this year. I will bring this feature up with Engineering again. If you have any other questions or concerns about this, please feel free to email support at, thank you!
