Thanks Ryan for responding, at least we now know that 4.0 works on some Win7/FF installs.
I have 4 Dell computers, three running Win7 64bit, 1 Win7 32 bit, all fully updated to latest Win7 Professional and FF 50.1.0. As it happens I got a brand new HP laptop last week, a dedicated machine (Win7 64 bit English) for my domotics so it has minimal extra software: only FF, Thunderbird Sighthound and HomeSeer are installed, with no extra plugins in FF. All software was installed as the latest version, so no "remains" of earlier installs. Unfortunately even with this minimalistic setup the same problem appears: clips don't play. I see the thumbnail of the clip, but when hitting the "play" button the blue ribbon immediately runs to the end of the clip and the screen remains black. Also the time indicated at the bottom immediately show the end time, as e.g. 0.25/0.25.
The only difference with your setup seems to be Win7 Home vs Win7 Pro, but I cannot see why this should matter.
