Upgraded to 4.0 - Clips no longer play in browser

by orion44 » Fri Dec 23, 2016 8:03 pm

I upgraded from 3.x to 4.0 and clips no longer play in the browser. Tried in Chrome, IE, and Palemoon on Windows 7 x64. The clip thumbnails load, however after clicking play nothing happens. I tested viewing clips on the Sighthound Android app and they work as expected.

Submitted bug via "Report a problem..." menu inside Sighthound.

Problem: Clips do not play in desktop browser via remote access

Steps to recreate the problem:
Open remote access and view clips(https://192.168.1.2:8848/clips.html)
Select a clip and click play

Expected results: Clip plays

Actual results: Nothing happens, clip does not play. Reproduced in all desktop browsers. Android app and Android Chrome browser (https://192.168.1.2:8848/mobile/clips.html) do not have the issue. Issue started with Sighthound 4.0.

Rolled back to 3.0.2 build 16019 and confirmed clip playback worked again. 4.0 might not be ready for primetime yet.

Support contacted me via email. After further testing, this appears to be a Windows 7 issue. Not sure how or why, but clip playback works in Windows 10 and a Chromebook I tested with.

The following error is thrown by the browser when I click play:

clips.html?camera=3&rule=3:1 Uncaught (in promise) DOMException: The play() request was interrupted by a call to pause().

I am continuing to troubleshoot with support via email. I re-installed SV4 and added two new cameras - I am able to remotely view the clips in Chrome, but no other browser.

I can confirm this bug is Windows 7/ Sighthound 4 related:
Windows 7: remotely viewing clips is not possible with Firefox, but works with Chrome
Windows 10 : remotely viewing clips works ok in all browsers
Ubuntu 15 : remotely viewing clips Ok with Firefox
Before updating to 4 Sighthound was behaving corrcetly.

Hi WfromL,

It does not seem that there is a general Win7+Firefox issue with SV 4.X remote access so we may need to isolate what is different on your machine from others, such as apps or plugins that may be interfering.

My win7 machine (64 bit, home premium, sp1) had a fairly old version of Firefox installed so I just tested remote access with several versions while updating. FF 43.0.1, 47.0.2, and the latest 50.1.0 were all successful at clip playback. I did have issues with the live stream playback but updating flash fixed this.

Please ensure that you're running the latest version of Firefox and Flash. Depending on what browser plugins you have installed and what access rights you have given them it may also be worth trying from private/incognito mode where many plugins are often disabled.

Thanks Ryan for responding, at least we now know that 4.0 works on some Win7/FF installs.
I have 4 Dell computers, three running Win7 64bit, 1 Win7 32 bit, all fully updated to latest Win7 Professional and FF 50.1.0. As it happens I got a brand new HP laptop last week, a dedicated machine (Win7 64 bit English) for my domotics so it has minimal extra software: only FF, Thunderbird Sighthound and HomeSeer are installed, with no extra plugins in FF. All software was installed as the latest version, so no "remains" of earlier installs. Unfortunately even with this minimalistic setup the same problem appears: clips don't play. I see the thumbnail of the clip, but when hitting the "play" button the blue ribbon immediately runs to the end of the clip and the screen remains black. Also the time indicated at the bottom immediately show the end time, as e.g. 0.25/0.25.
The only difference with your setup seems to be Win7 Home vs Win7 Pro, but I cannot see why this should matter.
