Memory leak

by Lincoln » Sat Oct 27, 2012 2:28 am

When wake up and check often has memory leak using one-hundred percent in-use of physical memory and paging file and unable to connect to camera and has missed all recordings while I was asleep and unable to intervene.

Computer frozen completely locked up unable to use unless I end Vitamin video tasks or force reboot.

There are no known memory leaks at this time. Is this something that recently started occurring, or has it always been true? What are the specs on your system? Please file a bug report by going to the "Help" menu and then choosing "Report a problem". Doing this soon after you've relaunched after this would be great, it will send us the most recent logs and hopefully give us insight into what is happening.

No it is not recent has been ongoing issue for some time now.

Approx every hour or less the camera will disconnect and show message 'Unable to connect to camera' for several seconds before connecting again.

However, occasionally it will not reconnect at all and then locks up the system completely.

Any suggestion?

Notice that you have listed for the beta version a bug fix that sounds appropriate to the issue we are experiencing:

Vitamin D Video 1.4.3 beta
Bug fixes

  • Fixed a small resource leak if a camera failed to connect.

Will this fix my issue? Camera still disconnects approx every hour. When will this be implemented in the retail release builds?

The best way to find out is to install the beta version yourself. Just follow the instructions on the link you found. It is just a simple matter of downloading a small file and putting it in the folder/directory appropriate to your version of the OS. Then let VDV update.

There is nothing I know of in the Beta version to be wary of. I am sure there are many people running it and I have not seen anyone post a complaint that something is not working right when using it. Even if it fails to run on your computer, it would be easy to uninstall it (and delete that special beta file) and reinstall the original released version.

I hope it cures your problem.

I think at this point, a lot more info is needed about your system so we can do a lot more cogitating and suggest things to try.

To start with, what brand/model of PC or MAC are you using?

What operating system is running? Do you keep it up-to-date? Keeping things up-to-date is 99% of the time a good thing, but sometimes a simple "fix" for one problem can have undesireable side effects someplace else.

What anti-malware software is installed?

What other programs run on this particular computer? Have you installed other programs on it, even though you no longer use them? (Many programs overwrite "standard" library files with "special" versions that are supposed to be compatible, but may not be as compatible as we'd like, and may need to be uninstaled to get other, more important/desireable programs to work right.)

What cameras are you using? Did they require installing special drivers?

How much memory is installed in the computer?

What is the size of the Harddrive?

How much is presently available on it?

in VDV, what values (Tools/Options menu) are set for the maximum disk space to use and the number of days to keep raw video?

If you need help in finding this information, please ask and we will respond with more detailed instructions on how to find the information.

We may eventually need to delve much deeper into the inner workings of this particular computer, so be prepared to be asked to do some rather odd things to it, and take it slow. This will not be a simple fix, until we find the problem, and then it will probably be an "Oh yeah! That was obvious!" sort of thing.

If you make changes (even if you think they are innocuous) be sure to write down what you change (and how you got to that setting so you can get back to undo it if necessary) and what happens when you do, so we can be kept up to date on what is going on.

On my system, I see a particular net-cam disconnect and reconnect every once in a while, but I have not discovered a reason that I can "prove", such that I can recommend a course of action. I have suspicions about it, but I am still gathering experience with different settings and allocations of drive space to see if that affects it at all.

You may think that some of my questions are of the "What difference does THAT make?" genre, but, believe me, it is all inter-related and each piece can have strange effects on the other pieces.

Hi Lincoln,

Are able to get to the task manager and confirm that it is a Vitamin D Process that is using memory/CPU? Are you running any anti-virus/security/firewall/etc... software? It has happened a few times in the past that some security software not configured to have Vitamin D as an exemption consume crippling amounts of CPU/Memory scanning all of the files and activity VDV creates.

DId you submit a bug report?

This issue still persists.

When the camera disconnects and is unable to reconnect all of physical memory is consumed. Even if I put another gigabyte stick or more memory it will still consume the extra amount until it consumes all.

I have to reboot the system or the performance is impossible to even move the mouse and the webcam device will not reconnect until doing so.

I have submitted a bug report an verified virus software is not the issue.

Unfortunately this has persisted for far too long and we will have to consider alternate software in future.

Sounds like the most likely source of this problem is a virus infection on your computer. Try booting into SAFE MODE and run a full scan with a good antivirus / malware removal software like MALWAREBYTES which is free to download.

Also check all the cooling fans on your computer (case, PSU, CPU) as well as the CPU heatsink and make sure they are not clogged up with dust. Blow / vacuum them out as necessary. Your machine may just be overheating and freezing up due to excessive crud (technical term).

If that does not work, try uninstalling then reinstalling your antivirus / firewall software, and make sure you are not running multiple antivirus software programs at the same time which can often cause problems.

If all else fails, reinstall your operating system and start over from scratch on your reformatted drive. That's the one sure way to get rid of a pesky virus.

Good luck.
