Can only connect to one Logitech C920

by paul.gaastra » Sat Mar 23, 2013 5:03 am

Hi,
I just connected a second Logitec C920 (USB webcam) to my Windows 7 machine (HP8200 i7 4G Ram) I thought they were both going when I added the second camera.

I set the system going with a time delay. When I came back only one camera was there and the name was swapped. It said it couldn't connect to the other camera.

Only one instantiation of the Logitech web cam controller is loaded.

If the answer is that I have to have two different cameras that's OK I'll just buy another one.

Thanks for any clues.

Hi Paul,

Sorry you're having trouble. I know there have been a few times in the past where two identical cameras would not work together, or might work poorly together, but before jumping down that line of thought here are a few quick troubleshooting suggestions:

Can you open both cameras at the same time in other software? Make sure to close VDV first, or turn the cameras off, as USB cameras can only be accessed by one application at a time. If not, how are your cameras connected to your computer? It is possible if they are on the same USB bus that the USB controller does not have the power/bandwidth to operate both at the same time.

I'm not sure what the Logitech web cam controller is, or what it does when it is running. You might try disabling or uninstalling it. You might also try checking what drivers the cameras are using, upgrading if newer drivers are available, or setting one or both to use the default windows drivers if they are not.

Thanks for your suggestions Ryan.

I think I investigated all of them. No luck.
I have had images from both cameras on my computer. One with the Logitech software and one with Vitamin d.

Maybe a clue for your software guys: I had Vitamin d running with two cameras connected to my computer. Trying to add another camera was unsuccessful. I unplugged the one whose which was working and turned on. After a while the image swapped to the other camera which it said it couldn't connect to.

Something wierd is going on.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Paul,

In general we've had good luck with multiple identical cameras on windows, provided that they have ample bandwidth and power (not going through the same USB hub for example). In cases where things haven't worked in the past, upgrading/downgrading drivers, uninstalling bundled software, switching to the built in windows webcam drivers usually solve the problem. It very well might be that there is something odd with two C920 cameras though. From your first post it's hard for me to tell if you ever actually saw them both running in VDV at the same time, or if you just thought that they were? Sending a bug report from within the app will provide us with some log files that might shed light on the situation if something weird is breaking internally in VDV.

In the three camera situation you mention in your last post, what two cameras were running, and what was the third you tried to add? If they were all USB cameras it definitely sounds like you might have some power/bandwidth issues on your USB host. If you know that you have multiple USB controllers on your computer try spreading the cameras between them. If you have the cameras going through a USB hub, or any USB extension cables please try removing those.

Doh!!!

When adding the second camera I didn't click the down arrow and click on the second camera.
Doing that got me the two cameras. :D
A thousand apologies for the time you spent answering the question.

Now I have to work out why my rules don't all show up.

Thanks very much.

Glad you got it working! I'd always rather help troubleshoot something and the end result be a simple fix than a difficult bug in the software.

As for rule trouble, maybe http://www.vitamindvideo.com/support/re ... rules.html or http://www.vitamindvideo.com/support/re ... _list.html contain something to help, or feel free to post here in the forum of course.
