Does Vitamin D do Date Stamping?

by the1lemming » Sun Aug 12, 2012 5:09 am

I've just bought the two camera licence of Vitamin D. My last CCTV software only worked with the propriety USB connector (SWANN) but that device died yesterday and as such the software stoppew working. That software was able to overlay the time and date of the events that were being recorded.

Can Vitamin D put a time and date onto recorded footage?

Cheers

No, but it is an often-requested feature. I'm hopeful that it will eventually get incorporated, but it might be a while before they can get 'round to it.

Even though I've bought the basic license, can you recommend any CCTV software that does motion detection along with date stamping?

I believe that almost all of them do it - VDV seems to be a glaring exception to that. It would probably be bad form for me to use VDV's forums to send you off to a competitor, so Google is probably your friend at this point.

I do have to say that I'm still torn. I purchased the basic license as well, but date/time stamping is still very important to me as well. However, VDV is so damned impressive in it's people-sensing capabilities that I'm trying to figure out ways around the issue so that I can rationalize eventually upgrading to the Pro license. One nice workaround is that many (most?) IP cameras will superimpose the date/time on their RTSP stream. I really like the HiDef camera I bought from Nelly's Surplus, which seems to work well with VDV, and it can data/time stamp its stream. But that won't help me with the cameras that I'll have running through my PV-149 capture card. And being on a very limited budget means that buying all this stuff is taking me months. Hopefully no break-ins occur before my system is completed.

I would encourage you to test out VDV against whatever competitor you choose (many of them have free trials that you can use). Do some testing for a few days and see how much time you will be spending looking at false positives from the rather primitive motion-sensing algorithms in other software compared to the people-detection in VDV. Then again, for most of us, we don't need to view stuff every day - we only need to check it when something has gone wrong. And at that point the more information we can demonstrate or prove (including date/time) the better.

Evening

Ho, I've tried just about every free-bee piece of DVR software that I can get my hands on over the last 12 months and have been subjected to seeing hour after hour of motion detection of next doors cats mooching around. :-(

As it is Vitamin D is excellent at missing out those sodding cats. At the moment I can live with the Date Stamping, until I can find a better piece of software but I need the date stamping to make sure that any evidence isn't thrown out of a court of law.

I have more questions but I'll start another OP.

However if you know of another piece of software, paid-for or free then please let me know. Maybe this could pursuade the writers of this cracking bit of kit to solve the date stamp issue. They've got my pennies so I do not feel guilty looking for something else.

Cheers

If you are using web cams you could try using http://manycam.com/ (free version) with vitamind. I haven't used manycam before but from its website it looks like it will do what you want.

Please let me know if this works :)

The automatic update of time and date to the recorded footage is not an inbuilt feature in Vitamin D. But I think you can add this feature by downloading the software. Recording will continue in the background even if you quit the Vitamin D Video application, but will be stopped if the computer gets shuts down or goes sleep mode.

Thanks
