Quick turn on and off of a rule?

by tuhraycee » Sun Aug 05, 2012 2:02 pm

Hi - I hope you don't mind some newbie questions...

Is there a way to turn a rule on and off other than deleting it and making a new one later? Here's my situation - on the weekend we leave the house randomly but when we're home we'll obviously be moving around in front of the webcam or on the computer. Setting a rule that records 24/7 or during daytime hours upon movement won't work on the weekend, so is there a way to deactivate a rule when we're home and then turn it on when we leave or do I need to edit or delete the rule every time.

Thanks! Trying to see if this is just the software I need. :)

You just need to check or uncheck the rule you have defined.

Once a rule is defined, look at the list of rules under the main video view window and you will see the middle area of each line of each rule lists when the rule is active. Click that text and you will get a dialog box that will allow you to set when the rule is active... "Every day", "Weekdays", "Weekends", or "Custom...". Select "Custom..." and you will get another dialog box that is a list of checkboxes, one for each day of the week. Pick the days you want the rule to be active (useful if your "Weekends" are not Saturday and Sunday).

You can also set the times of the day a rule is to be active. You can only set one time span per rule. If you have multiple time spans, (say all night and then an hour around noon,) you can create multiple rules (identical in detection properties, if you wish) and select different time spans for each, (for example: from 6 PM until 7 AM the next day for one rule and 12 Noon to 1 PM for a 2nd rule).

In your case, if you wanted a rule active on weekdays and not weekends. but your weekends start on Friday night at 7:30 PM and ends on Monday morning at 5:30 AM, then one rule would be active Tues, Wed, & Thurs for 24 hours, but not Fri, Sat, Sun or Mon. A 2nd rule would be active on Monday only from 5:30 AM until midnight and a 3rd rule would be active on Friday only from midnight to 7:30 PM.

In playing with this I think I have found a minor error in some on-screen instructions. If all rules are disabled or the date/time is such that no rules are active, the screen shows a message that starts with "This camera is on" 9and then explains about either enabling a rule or setting a schedule), and the icon below the main view shows green as if the camera is on, but on my present computer with a built-in webcam, the light on the camera itself goes off, indicating the camera is actually off, and I am unable to retrieve any video from the system for the time the camera is disabled. I was playing with this to verify if I should warn you about the system still recording raw video whether there is a rule or not, as I remembered seeing the on-screen verbage about the camera being on even if the rules were off, but I see now that the text is apparently wrong and there is no need to worry about the camera recording your personal activities even while the rules are disabled.

Also, note, if you have multiple rules defined, and you manually disable one or more of them in the list (using the checkbox on the right of the rules), the list re-arranges to keep the active rules at the top. I had the names of the rules so similar that it confused me as I disabled the top rule in the list, it moved to the bottom of the list and it looked to me like clicking the top one altered the checkbox of the bottom one! (That is what I get for playing with this stuff before my morning caffine jolt takes hold.) The list is actually 2 lists, one above the other, The top one is an alphabetical list of the enabled rules and the bottom one is an aplhabetical list of the disabled rules, so as rules are enabled and disabled, the two lists re-arrange.
