Delete pointers vs permanent delete

by B00ze » Fri Jun 08, 2012 7:08 pm

Good day.

Does anyone know if deleting "the information used to find Saved clips" then "transforms" these saved clips into "temporary" video that gets deleted after N days?

Vitamin seems to be working this way:

- At first, all video is "temporary" video, even "saved" clips (which are at first only pointers into temp video).
- When temporary video expires, saved clips are extracted from the bigger "temp" chunks and saved seperately.

So what happens if you delete "the information used to find Saved clips" from clips that are older than the "days to keep" temp video, do the "Saved" clips become temporary, and therefore get deleted when cleanup runs? If this is the case, then why the "permanently delete saved clips" option?

For now I'm using "permanently delete" but I'm wondering if I need to bother; processing time is very high, too high for a simple delete - it's as tho Vitamin was splitting the bigger temp chunks and removing the portions I delete. I'd rather have "Saved" clips become temp video again and let the garbage collector clean-up later...

Thanks.
Best Regards.

Hi Booze,

All data is eventually deleted. Some space is reserved for recent video cache, but much of the disk space you allocate to Vitamin D Video is used to retain clips created by a rule with the "Save to my computer" response. The quick delete option will remove all tracking data associated with the selected clip, essentially just making it unaccessable via search. It will then later be deleted as normal with the other old cached video. The "permanent delete" option was added because we had a lot of customers asking to be able to immediately delete a bit of video. Accidentally walking around in front of your cameras in your underwear perhaps? This option takes longer because as you noted, in order to delete a specific segment of video we might need to divide and re-encode larger clips. If you don't care about removing that segment of video from your computer right at that instance, quick delete is likely all you need.

Hi Ryan!

I tried a few forum searches but kept getting "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words" so I ended-up having to ask. Thank you much for your reply, it is exactly what I thought, quick-delete is all I need :-)

Best Regards,
