x-10 outdoor?

by bryanw20 » Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:02 pm

Looking to buy an outdoor camera. I need night vision, and preferably long range, at min 20M.
I see an X-10 Airsight Outdoor, and Foscam FI8905W seem to be what I need (unless you have better suggestions)
As with any product, reviews are mixed on both. I have atleast seen youtube video on the Foscam, can't seem to find any on the X10

I'm just needing to monitor my drive/yard that's is 800' long, but the main area around the house is about 80' away from where the camera will mount. It's mostly pitch black out at night, one security light about 400' away.

Will an X10 work with VitD? Suggestions on this or other camera? Looking to stay in the $100 range

Actually leaning toward the Foscam FI8905W; since the previous models are listed as compatable & longer night range; hoping the newer 905 with auto work like the 904 as listed.

The Foscam F18905W looks like a nice camera and the present price is very good!

Note that is not a weatherproof housing so it will need to be mounted in some sort of enclosure or behind a window in the house or garage. But if mounted behind a window, be careful that the infrared lights don't reflect off the window and washout the camera image. (I have a plastic storm window that is opaque to infrared and IR LEDs just light up the windowpane producing an all white image!)

You are paying for features that VDV cannot use; Sound is not recorded by VDV so the built-in mic is of no use nor is the socket to use an external mic. Tilt/Pan can be used to position the view (easier than climbing a ladder to reposition it!), but once positioned and VDV is monitoring for motion, if you log-in via a browser and change the view, VDV will detect that as "motion". Yet, even with those useless features, it still looks like a good buy!

And if you use the Tilt/Pan you will know that is happening and can ignore VDV issuing alerts at that time. I have a cam with Tilt/Pan and often alter the view to look for some varmit that is setting off an infrared motion detector that has a much wider field of view and rings a doorbell when a person or animal passes anywhere near it. (Now if I just had some sort of weapon with remote tilt/pan and TRIGGER!, maybe I could get rid of that racoon!)
