When I first started using VDV I was unable to read the MP4 files with any program I had, but now I can open them with Windows Media Player, so something got updated to handle them since then. Windows Update fixed the problem at some time as I know I didn't go searching for a solution. Now I have new computers and they will play MP4 files with no problems. Maybe you just need to update your system, or try some different programs.
But if the file was not closed properly because of the power interruption, then some programs will balk at playing it. In that event you need to try yet another program that will not care about the lack of the proper closing information and load it anyway. It may give a warning that the file is incomplete, but load and play what it can.
I think Microsoft Movie Maker (should have come with the present OS you have, such as XP or Win 7) will do this. It is possible that the last few seconds will be lost, but how much is actually lost depends on a lot of factors, one being the length of time between the last time the buffers were written to the disk and when power was lost. I doubt if it would be more than 15 seconds; probably more like 2 or 3 seconds.
Of course, I am talking about Windows, but I am sure that a MAC has similar programs.
