Vitamin D & the iPhone, my solution

by someone » Sat Jan 12, 2013 7:41 am

Hi,

I just discovered Vitamin D tonight and am very impressed with what I've seen so far. Like many here I was initially disappointed that there was no accompanying iPhone app, but I've found a workaround that meets my needs. I thought I'd share it here in case it helps others. Here is a brief overview of what I've done:

- Set up a new email account (e.g. [email protected])
- Set up rules in Vitamin so when an event occurs I will be emailed from this new email address
- Changed the video storage location to my Dropbox folder on my Mac
- Added the new email address as a VIP on my iPhone
- Set up VIP alerts so that when a VIP email is received my phone will show an alert, make a loud noise and vibrate

This means that whenever an event occurs the video will be automatically uploaded to Dropbox and I will receive a push notification on my phone. I can then simply open the dropbox app on my iPhone and view the video.

This may not be an ideal solution for everyone, but it is working brilliantly for me so far. Any questions, let me know.

I currently have 29GB of videos in my video folder... It doesn't seem realistic to upload all of that into Dropbox.
Also, when browsing with the Dropbox interface, how do you find the relevant video? How do you know where to scrub to?

Thanks for your info.

Hi dylan,

If you're going to take an approach like this I'd suggest only doing it with clips matching select rules rather than all recorded video cache. Not only is the latter overwhelming with space and bandwidth, it will be even more so with the file thrash as cache is split into clips.

The easiest way to simplify this at the moment would be to run a local ftp server that points to your desired dropbox folder, then use the ftp response on the rules you care about. Then only the matching clips will hit your dropbox folder, you'll use less disk space, and you won't have to worry about "scrubbing" as only clips rather than cache are uploaded.

Hope that helps,
- ryan
