Video Storage

by whoamib » Thu Nov 24, 2011 12:46 pm

I have vitamin d running on three different computers and I have set the max storage of video to 175GB and up on all three and none of them go over 120GB. One goes to 107GB the other goes to 119GB and the last one goes to 120GB. Is this a glitch in the software? Can the software not handle managing the video past 120GB? If so I would like to request a feature update to increase the max storage space.

As a note, the hard drives that I'm storing the video to have at least 500GB of free space so it is not an issue with space on my hard drive.
Thank you for your help!

My system has a 920GB harddrive presently showing 193GB available.

I have 5 cameras defined (just added a 5th, but it has only been in use one day so I don't think any of the numbers presented here will be affected much by its short use time). I created this system on August 25th of this year (I have been using VDV for a lot longer than that, but this is a new computer system).

I just checked the drive usage and find that Windows Explorer indicates that the "C:\Users\(userID)\AppData\Local\Vitamin D Video\videos\archive" folder is using 699GB. Close enough to the allocated space to be called a match

I checked VDV to see what it listed (Tools\Options) and it shows that my allocation is 700GB for VDV use and keep Temporary video for up to 99 days. It also shows there are 193.3GB of available space.

I also checked the individual folders for each camera in the Archive folder and discover that it has been throwing away temporary video older than 24 days (folders from 24 days ago show very few files remaining and they are only the videos that were saved-by-rule.

I also find that folders older than August 31st are empty of all videos (i.e.: those videos that were kept-by-rule have been deleted due to the amount of disk space being over run). All the folders older than that are completely empty (and I certain there were videos kept-by-rule for those days).

I do not know the algorthym used to decide which files to delete when the number of days is set so high that the allocated disk space is exceeded. It is obvious that some decision is made such that the number of days to keep temporary videos is shortened to keep rule retained videos longer, but even those are eventually deleted... it also shows that the folders are retained even though they are empty. (I don't know if they might be deleted after some time longer than this system has been in use.)

I just now altered the amount of disk space allocated to VDV to 800GB to see what happens. i.e.: I allocated an additional 100GB to the 700GB I had originally allocated, which should leave just 93.3GB available for anything else I do with that PC.

The 1st thing I have noticed is that VDV still indicates that there is 193.3GB available on the harddrive. So it is not taking into account the space allocated, but only the space presently in use. This could be confusing in that I might decide to add that 193.3GB it still shows as available to the 800GB I just set as the allocation, and that would allocate 993.30GB... Which would exceed the actual amount of space on the drive without the OS and other junk on there! Oops... a definite No-No.

I wonder if what you are seeing is the result of what you have set for the number of days to retain Temporary video. Maybe if you watch the actual used space for a few more days, the number may increase, but only by the amount of space used by Kept-by-rule videos.
