error occured - CPU usage 100% -

by gbell007 » Mon Oct 31, 2011 5:31 pm

Since a week, I'm not able to use my laptop and VitaminD open more than 1-2 hour ... my laptop stop working.

As soon as I reboot my laptop and start VitaminD, I can see my CPU usage going up to 95-100% ( in the task manager )...

When my laptop crash I received this message from my VitaminD software :
Error occured
See the logfile "C:program files.... vitamin D agent.exe.log" for details ...

Is there a conflic with a software in my laptop ? a win7 update ?

I have 2 cameras connected to a normal laptop with dual core + 4gb of ram... nothing special...

I was using this laptop + VD software 24/24 , 7 days a weeks ... 0 problem before ?

Some hint to help me ?

gbell007,

The best theory I can come up with is that your laptop is overheating. Two of my last three laptops have had problems like this, which seemed to get worse with age. As the laptop gets hotter, thermal throttling kicks in and the whole thing slows down. Eventually it crashes.

Things to try:
  • See if cooling your laptop down helps. Invest in a laptop cooler or blow a fan at it. In my case, the laptop would speed up when I put it on my granite countertop (until the countertop heated up, that is).
  • Try replacing the heatsync on your laptop. This might fix your problem (I still haven't gotten around to trying this on my laptop).

Hope that helps. Good luck!

-Doug

I'll second that Laptop Overheating theory. Laptops are great PCs but they are so compact that they have a very hard time venting the heat well enough to run 24/7 at the intensity that video processing requires.

Hello All,

I really think I have a conflic in my laptop using my VD software ...

I have bought a cooling fan for my laptop
I have used my trendnet software instead of VD without any problem
I have tried WebcamXP software instead of VD no problem.

When I run my VD software, after a couple of time ( 1hre to 5-6hours ), software crash, same error note on my laptop.
Absolutly needs to restart my PC...

I don't want to re-install and reformat all Windows 7 for this... ( I have tried to un-install + re-install VD ... same problem ).

any idea ?

You may have a problem with VDV and that particular computer.

What brand and model of computer are you using? The number of CPUs [or "cores"] and the speed of harddrive and other things can affect the actual load on the computer to generate heat that can damage components or disrupt the operation.

How many cameras?

How many VDV "rules" are defined for the computer to be processing?

What are the scenes like? Dark scenes seem to take more processing that bright ones (but I have NO idea why!)

The answers to the above might help determine if you really might have a heat problem or maybe something else is causing what ails the system.

Some things that might reduce the load on the computer would be to reduce the resolution of the output of the cameras and reduce the frame rate to 10 to 15.

I'd also like to point out something that might be important. I bought an external fan for a laptop one time and discovered it to be detrimental to the heating problem I had. The fan was a flat plate with two fans that pulled air from above the plate and exhausted it out the sides. The fan in the laptop computer pulled air from below the laptop and vented it out the sides. The problem was that, with the laptop sitting on the fan plate, the area above the fan plate is the same area as below the laptop. The external fans were stong enough to try to pull more air than could pass through the very thin gap between the fan plate and the laptop, such that it was sucking some air backwards through the fans in the laptop. Thus less air was getting through the laptop heat exchanger and it actually ran warmer when the external fan was running! Not only that but the external fan was powered by plugging it into a USB port which just meant the laptop had to dissapate more power (and more heat internally) to run it. (I have always thought that the designers of "LAPtop" computers have no idea that when sitting on your "LAP" the vents for the fan intake would be blocked and very little air would be able to pass through the heat exchanger.... I think the designer of that external fan didn't have a clue either!)

You external fan may be of a better design than the one I had. (I hope so!... The one I had was a waste of money!)

The TrendNET software is good for what it does, but it does not have the capability of VDV and thus is probably not taxing the computer to the same extent. I have not used WebcamXP so I cannot tell what kind of load it would put on the computer.

I have a TravelMate 7730 ( Acer ) dual core P8700.

When I said computer crash, I should mention, that Vitamin D software crash , and computer needs to be re-start ( reboot ),
This is not like if the security heat breaker was turning off, to shut down computer.

I only have 2 camera ( one attach with USB + adapter , the other is RJ45 )

I'm agree that Trendnet software is not what I'm looking for and WebcamXP is not doing a good job like VD.

When my VitaminD shot down after a certain period, I'm not able to re-start the software , I absolutely needs to re-stard the computer.
( If I do a Ctrl+Alt-Del to see the Process runing in background, I can see that 1x VD is still runing the Memory taken is close to 1 300 000K...
I understand why my PC are so slow when it's append... )

Anyway I'm close to reformat everything.... just to see ...

Even with 1 camera open .... error message :

- See the logfile " C: /program .... .... vitamin D agent.exe.log" for details

- The application has encountered a problem and must exit.

I do Ctrl+Alt+Del :

I still have a VD process and memory up to 800 000k used by...

I really don't understand !!!

Hi riverrat,

Can you send that log file to [email protected]? I'm happy to take a look at it and see what is going on.

Thanks,
- ryan
