Remotely Arm / Disarm cameras. Help with ideas

by sinandgrin » Wed Oct 19, 2011 11:38 am

I have been using the starter edition of this software for a little bit now and really like the feel of the UI and simplicity of everything. Through a few round about ways I have been able to make the software fit into my home automation setup fairly well but there is one main feature that I would love to have that I haven’t gotten to work just yet and wanted to see if someone could help with my idea.

Is there some way that I could remotely arm and disarm one, some, or all of the cameras within Vitamin D? I would like to open my HStouch app on my iphone and navigate to my home security page and hit a button that would arm, one, some, or all of my cameras when I was say leaving my house, and then be able to do the opposite when returning home. This way I could have a rule to send me my notifications from any camera, 24 hours a day when they detect any motion, AS LONG AS, they are armed, so that when I am home I would I am not constantly be getting email alerts and notifications to my IOS devices.
Using HStouch, it would be nice if the button action could run an event or script to call Vitamin D and arm the appropriate cameras. Is there a backend command, or way that I could command Vitamin D to do such a thing? Another lower tech thought I had would be to have the HStouch command run an event to use Eventghost, or Girder, or something like this, to arm the cameras in Vitamin D, either using a macro idea to open the program and click the camera on/off buttons, or something maybe a little more elaborate than that. So I'm just kind of throwing this all out there to see if anyone thinks this could be a possibility, or better yet (if there is still active development on this software) have a dedicated feature to remotely arm and disarm cameras from an external command.

I'm on a Mac. MobileMe allows me to share screen remotely. Can see screen from home, and control cursor, too, so I can turn anything on or off, etc.

If I didn't have that, I'd look at the various "remote management" software packages that are out there.

Thanks for the idea here, and while I too can remotely access my HTPC running Vitamin D from my iphone, it is a clunky and time consuming procedure and not a preferred solution that I am looking for. I was mostly hoping to learn of some backend or command line access to VD. or to find someone a little familiar with Eventghost or Girder with an idea, but thanks for the suggestion!

I'm looking for the same thing. A keyboard shortcut would have been enough for me. Then I could trigger on/off using a remote control or my phone, via Girder from Promixis.

By the way, this is absolutely the best surveillance application out there for home users. IT's easy to set up, and it's the first application I've tried who doesn't react to lighting differences. All the other apps I've tried are going crazy at sunup and sundown. Keep up the godd work! :)

I have been researching motion detection software and one feature that is a must have for me is the ability to remotely arm/disarm. I can also use remote software to access VDV but need a simple elegant solution so the wife (a non techie) will buy into using the system as security.

Everything I read about VDV is great and I want to buy (and recommend) VDV but I need this feature. I am hopeful this feature is in the works.
