Videos copied to a new hard drive are not viewable

by rockdog » Mon Oct 10, 2011 4:11 pm

My hard drive crashed and I've copied the Vitamin D video archives and their parent (numbered) folders from the old drive to the same location on a new hard drive. I can view the new videos being saved on the new drive, but the old videos are not visible using the Vitamin D interface, even though they occupy the same folder. When I scroll back to the previous days in the interface, it says there are zero events for those days.

Is there any way to import old videos?

Hi rockdog,

If you only copied the video files themselves VDV won't know anything about them (and in fact, since they are unknown files in its protected file structure they will likely be deleted). The actually information about objects that were tracked, etc... is stored in files contained in the Vitamin D Video folder. There are databases that track the cameras, objects, files for the rules, etc... All of which are necessary. If you have the entire old directory structure from your previous drive you should be able to copy those to identical locations on the new drive (when VDV is closed and no VDV processes are running), but there is no way to merge this old data with any you have recorded since.
