Accessing Railcam

by Semper Vaporo » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:52 pm

There is a web cam at the Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, Virginia, sponsored by Trains Magazine, that is at address:

http://128.173.197.94:443/RRCmov

The camera is aimed at the Norfolk and Southern RR track through Downtown Roanoke for us "Railfans" to see trains.

It is a very good camera with 900x450 resolution. Color in the daytime and B&W at night.

If I enter that address in the address bar of IE-8, it runs the Windows Media Player and IE-8 terminates (or closes the tab).

I have entered that address string, broken up into the appropriate segments in the Camera Setup dialog and the dialogbox displays the same result (about the middle of the dialog) when I get it split among the one dropdown-selector (Protocol: http) and the three text boxes (IP address: 128.172.197.94, HTTP port: 443, & Stream path: RRCmov). But VDV will not Connect to it.

Any ideas how to use VDV to monitor for a train on the tracks?

Hi Semper,

The address you linked to actually does a series of redirects and ultimately ends up pointing to the following:
mms://128.173.197.94:443/RRCmov?MSWMExt=.asf

MMS is a very windows specific protocol and was also deprecated by Microsoft in 2003, so it is highly unlikely we will be adding support for it. I'm afraid this train cam won't be functional in VDV unless they update their stream. Sorry for the bad news.
