Monitoring Resolution

by kram » Sun Apr 17, 2011 3:15 pm

I have recently installed the starter version of VitD, and I am seriously considering purchasing the Basic version. I looked for a pre-sales contact on the web site, but couldn't find one.

1) I realize that the Basic version allows me to record in a higher resolution. Will the real-time monitoring also be displayed in a higher res ?
My camera res. looks good in real-time if I connect it to a stand-alone DVR, but the quality is not so good when connected to my PC and viewed through VitD. My cam is hard-wired BNC. For connecting to the PC, I use a BNC-RCA adapter, which is plugged into a Pinnacle Dazzle, which then connects to the PC via USB.
Would the real-time res. improve if I used a BNC card instead of my current connection style?

2) I've noticed that the saved videos are NOT date and time stamped when viewing with a separate video player. Is there an option for this in the basic version? The folders and file names that VitD creates seem to have no logic within the file name to determine the date and time that they were created.

Thanks

1. The Basic edition can record at 320x240, 640x480, 1024x768, or 1280x1024. However, the application itself will only show up to 640x480. The higher resolutions can be used if you export the video from Vitamin D Video and then use another program to look at them.

The 640x480 video will be better than the 320x240 video, but might not be perfect. Many of the USB video adapters leave the video interlaced, which means motion will look a little strange (every other line gets updated on each frame). I have never tried a BNC card, so I can't say if they make the interlacing problem better. Sorry!

2. There is no date/time stamp option in the Basic Version. Vitamin D Video was designed so that you used the application to view the video, not an external viewer. This lets you use Vitamin D Video's search features. The Basic Version does let you FTP your clips, though. When video clips are sent via FTP, they are intended to be viewed by an external viewer and do have more sensible names / durations.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply Doug. If you aren't using a BNC card, what method are you using to connect to your PC?

kram,

We've found that IP cameras tend to be better for hooking up to computers, since they plug into Ethernet (or connect via WiFi). We've also played a lot with USB webcams, though most of them tend not to be as optimized for security / monitoring purposes (they're not good w/ low light, in general).
