Use Android phone as wireless cam - Here's how!

by WinstonKC » Sat Apr 02, 2011 11:07 am

I was able to setup my Sprint HTC EVO as a wireless camera.
This should work on any Android phone or tablet that has camera.
This was tested when the phone was attached to my home wireless network via WiFi.

It's a two part process.

Part One: Enable the phone as a webcam.
Download "IP Webcam" app from the Android Market. It's free. Install it and start it up.
When the app is running click on the "How do I connect" window. Select Wifi. This will tell you what IP address has been assigned to the phone and what port to use. You'll need this info in part two.
Close that informational window and leave the app running.

Part two: Setup Vitamin D to recognize the phone camera.
Open the Vitamin D program. From the menu select...
TOOLS>Add a camera (if you have the free version you'll have to REMOVE the existing camera. You can easily add that back later. Document your settings if the that cam was a pain in the arse to configure.)
CAMERA TYPE: Network (IP) Camera
MANUFACTURER: Other
NEXT>
Select "Use Vitamin D to get my camera working"
NEXT>
Select " Manually specify the address of the network camera"
NEXT>
Enter the camera settings in the Vitamin D "CAMERA SETUP" screen is as follows:
CAMERA TYPE: Other IP camera
PROTOCOL: http
IP ADDRESS: <enter IP address of phone>
HTTP PORT: Most likely 8080 but use the port info retrieved earlier.
STREAMPATH: videofeed
NEXT>
Test for connectivity.
Follow troubleshooting instructions if connection fails. If you can't "view the camera from your browser" then you may have one of the following problems
- don't have the the correct IP address of the phone or you fat fingered when entering it in the setup
- the IP CAM app isn't actively running on your phone
-your phone isn't connected to your Wifi network
NEXT>
Enter the cam location.
NEXT>
Click FINISH and have some fun!

NOTE: You should setup your wifi router to assign the same (static) IP to the phone every time it joins the wifi network.

So awesome! Thanks for sharing this helpful tool! I just set up my HTC with hosted PBX, and I have just started playing around with the wireless cam.

That’s really cool. This means the phone can be used in place of a CCTV camera also. But since it has been sometime since you posted this, I am assuming there are more advanced apps in the Android market which serve the same purpose. If yes, could you mention which one you are using now?
