Saving Clips

by bbits » Tue Mar 08, 2011 8:12 pm

I an new to VDV, and am a little confused.

I have a rule setup to save to disk when motion is detected. When using the VDV interface, I can see the various clips highlighting movement, typically a few minutes in length, but the saved clips all seem to be 15+ minutes.

It is almost like I am seeing 15 minute chunks of all video being saved, not just the clips highlighting the movement. Doesn't the save to disk option just save the part that includes the movement?

Am I missing something?

Hi bbits,

We don't intend for people to interact directly with the video files, so things like their organization and length might be a bit confusing. Navigating through the application is much quicker (lots of great keyboard shortcuts and other goodies on top of the obvious search filters). If you do want a video clip itself you can right click the item in the search view and choose export. This will give you the trimmed clip with a much nicer filename.

I'll try to give a quick overview of what's going on in general:

When we're recording video we initially save everything, starting a new clip every 15 minutes, which is what you're seeing. While we record we're constantly saving information about the objects in the scene, checking against your configured rules, and performing any responses necessary. All video is stored for a certain period of time, so that you have a chance to review something at the end of the day. Say a window was broken and the perpetrator was only in the scene for a single frame, this isn't enough time for us to properly track and identify, but that frame might still be useful to you. You can set this cache duration in the options. After this cache duration expires (24 hours for instance) we go back through these 15 minute files and break them up into the parts that should be saved (triggered a rule with the save response) and deleting the parts that weren't. This is probably what you were expecting to see immediately.

For details on how this works, please see the following page of the reference guide:

Hope that helps,

OK. So now I understand how it works, but...

The computer I have doing the monitoring is not typically used. I have a process that monitors the folder and synchronizes the 'clips' to another location for viewing. Is it possible to have the temporary files saved to a different location than the actual clips so that I could just synchronize the clips instead of the entire day?

Hi bbits,

For this sort of scenario I would suggest using the ftp response, it will do what you are trying to achieve. Please see http://www.vitamindinc.com/support/ref_ ... s.html#ftp
