Simple features request

by gerko511 » Mon Mar 07, 2011 5:36 am

I'm wondering why simple features such as time stamping and full screen monitor view is still not available. These are features that is available in any other security cam software on the market. Time stamping is in fact necessary for any security system.

However, Vitamin-D is still the best software for me to use because it has features other software lacks like people detection (works quite good), very good control over the arrea's you want to watch.

Here are some of my requests:
- time stamping
- full screen, or adjustable size of monitor view
- time line video export

Hi gerko511,

Thanks for the suggestions. A couple quick comments:

  • I assume you've already checked, but just in case I'll mention that many IP cameras natively support timestamping though it can be a bit tough to find where to enable it.
  • With regard to the time line video export request, I can think of a few ways to interpret this and I'm not sure which you mean. Are you asking to export one large video with several clips back to back?

Lets say something happened between 10:14 am and 10:17 am. I want to be able to export the video between the start and end time of that event.

My camera is a logitech c510 webcam. I haven't found a way to time stamp the camera anywhere in the logitech drivers or software. Also, all other video surveillance software on the market, support time and date stamping. So I do not understand why it is that difficult to understand for Vitamin D Video that this is a very important feature. To have camera label in the stamp would also be very useful.

I also do not understand why there is no way to have a proper full size camera view or just a small preview which is somewhere in the corner of my screen and always on top.

Perhaps you can add a time/date and location overlay to your USB camera by using something like WebcamMax, then set VDV to use WebcamMax as the video input?

Most IP cams have these features built-in, as well as a full-screen view - so in those cases you would view the camera directly, and not need to view the camera through VDV.

I personally feel that for integrity reasons it's better that the camera itself produce the time/date stamp and location text, rather then the recording system - this is a way to "prove" that the camera was alive and well, and not disabled, tampered with, or "replaced" with a video loop of a normal scene.

Thanks for your reply. I just tried WebcamMax a view moments ago.
That doesn't seem to work very well with VDV on my PC (win7, 64-bit).
When I use WebcamMax as the input device, an error occurs every time it tries to connect.

Runtime error. This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Besides that, I was not able to find a way in WebcamMax to put a layer with a date/time stamp on the pictures. Only lots of silly effects etcetera.

Maybe the error is caused by some other windows configurations but I do not like the idea of using yet another application running on the background to do the trick.

I still think it should be available in the VDV software itself. As well as a risizable or fullsize single camera view. In my opinion these are very basic things to have in an application for video surveillance.

I absolutely agree with the time/date stamp feature being built in vitaminD.

If I need to export video, I need to have the time and date stamped onto the video, this is a basic feature that should be available on all security software.

Further, I use a HD webcam as the camera, as I'd guess most users of Vitamind do, and as such don't have any built in timestamp options. I'd also like to avoid sucking up more of my computer resources by running unnecessary software (e.g. webcammax) for such a simple feature.
