Permanent deletion of videos to run as a background thread

by paulurban » Thu Feb 24, 2011 2:46 pm

I have recently started using Vitamin D Video, and I am very impressed! Thank you for sharing it!

I have one suggestion for an improvement: make the permanent deletion of video run as a background thread. It takes a long time to delete a large amount of video, and I cannot use the application until it has completed.

In the UI, you could add the videos that were selected for deletion to a persistent list, then instantly hide them from the user. Then, a background thread could work away at physically deleting the videos. If the user quits the application before the background thread has deleted all of the videos on the list, the application could continue deleting from where it stopped, the next time it is started.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion. What you are asking for is almost what the 'quick delete' option does, the tracking data is immediately removed and the clips themselves are deleted by a background process as if they were cache (once they are 24 hours old, or whatever value you have set in the options). The only difference between this and your suggestion is that they won't be deleted until the cache value is hit, but since you suggested allowing deletion resuming on the next application run I assume this would be OK for you?

Doug did a great description of the delete options on our old forum: https://vitamind.fogbugz.com/default.asp?video.1.307.2

Hope that helps,
