lmarrow,
What type of laptop is it? Do other programs (skype, instant messenger programs, etc) work with the camera when it is away from home?
We had a recent report from one user with an Acer laptop that sounds very similar to this. I looked into it and concluded that there must be some type of power management software on the laptop that was disabling the camera at certain times. The most likely was that the software would either disable the camera when the laptop wasn't plugged into power, or that the software disable the camera when there was no network connection (under the assumption that the camera couldn't possibly be useful with no Internet connection?)
Hope this helps. If you figure the problem out (or can answer some of the above questions), let us know!
