I'm hacking together a solution using gmail, an app called boxcar, and my cell provider's email-sms gateway. Boxcar is a push notification app that doesn't use much battery because it uses native push daemons which are running on the iphone anyway, doesn't drain the battery as much as pushing email. If you're on ATT, the email-sms gateway is:
[email protected]Have vdv send all emails to gmail.
Have gmail filter the mail twice
First, have gmail forward the email to boxcar
Second, have gmail forward the email to your email-sms gateway
What happens is this: When vdv is triggered it sends email to the gmail account. Gmail forwards the email to boxcar which makes your phone alarm almost immediately (or not, it can be quiet). It also forwards to your sms gateway, which provides you with a text message that includes a pic from the camera.
You're probably wondering why I don't just have vdv send email directly to the sms system. I don't because the ATT email-sms gateway is often so pathetically slow as to be completely useless. I've gotten sms messages from vdv that were 2 days old! I also have my iphone's mail app set to use the same gmail account, so if boxcar's jangling but sms is silent, I can easily check the mail. The messages might not arrive via text, but gmail has them.
Another quirk is using two filters instead of just having one filter with two recipients. I'm leery of spam filters, so I prefer to send two individual emails.
Why not just use boxcar? Because it doesn't forward the pic or any body text. I just use it to backup the sometimes slow sms gateway.
gmail has a limit of 500 emails sent per day. If you're using smtp.google.com make sure it's a different account or you'll hit the limit quick.
