Excellent Software

by matthew.linehan » Sun Sep 19, 2010 11:05 am

Short Version: I'm very impressed with Vitamin d, it's "detection" is down right magical. Blows the competition out of the water.

Long Version:
I just acquired four foscams for the purpose of setting up a low cost, home built, home perimeter security system. Knowing that I don't know what I'm doing, I decided to take it slow and experiment with temporary camera placements. It didn't take me long to discover that I was going to need a "security camera" program. Scanned the internet and located a popular program for this task (4 camera, 50$), hereafter referred to as NotVd.

So I set up one of the turret foscams in the north corner of the front bay window, shooting across the front walkway and viewing our driveway to the south. Setup NotVd to record on motion events. Made several test runs, by walking in front of the camera, each time turning up the motion sensitivity until it reliably detected me. Setup NotVd to e-mail me on my smart phone.

Result: NotVd e-mailed me 170 times the first day. :x (Detecting cars on street in front of house.) So I turned down the motion sensitivity, and NotVd e-mailed me 70 times the 2nd day. :x So I turned down motion sensitivity and NotVd registered 5 false hits the 3rd day.

I decided that I could live with 5 false hits per day. But then on the 4th day, while I was watching the NotVd live feed, a stranger came walking up the sidewalk and rummaged through the contents of my neighbors car. I ran out of the house and chased the perp off, but I don't have a recording because.... The NotVd motion detector didn't fire.... Crap that isn't going to work...

So I reconfigured NotVd to record 24 x 7, resigned to manually reviewing the videos each day. Forget that!!! It takes about 60 minutes to review 24 hours of recording!!!!! Yea, like I have time to do that daily!!!!

So again I searched the internet, and discovered Vitamin D. At first I was reluctant to try Vd because eventually I will have four cameras running, and the $200 price tag was distasteful, but the video demos looked so very good! Oh well, try the free 1 camera version and see how it works. Glory Hallelujah !!!!

I've had Vd running 24 hours at this point, and all I can say is wow!!!!! No false positives, reliably detects motion in the front yard while ignoring motion on the street. Reliably differentiates between people and not-people during the day. Not quite so accurate during the night, but I can fix that with improved IR illumination. It only took me 5 minutes to review the first day of clips. Vd appears to have accurately only e-mailed me under conditions I wanted e-mail!

I revise my opinion, Vitamin d is well worth the $200 price tag simply due to the time savings! For now my "testing" continues, but I think Vd is going to be the hands down, blow away the competition winner.

Thank-you for making such a wonderful product!
