Vitamin D Capability Question

by Guest » Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:17 am

Hello,

I came across your software and I want to congratulate you for it as you are attempting to solve non-trivial computer vision problems.

I have a few questions after trying the starter version:

I set up a rule such that a sound is played when someone crosses a boundary in a particular direction. I noticed that if the person is moving at normal walking speed the software is able to detect the person and play the alert sound. However, if the person is moving at a brisk rate or faster, the person is not detected and hence no alarm is sounded. Is this due to the frame rate?

I also noticed that it takes at least 9 seconds after the person crossed the boundary for the sound to be played. Is this just a limitation of the starter version? How close to an instantaneous response can we get after the person crosses the boundary?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Your observations are correct.

An object that is in the scene for a very short amount of time (small number of frames) may not be tracked. The effect is much worse in bad lighting when the camera only provides a few frames per second. Vitamin D Video wants to capture at 10FPS, but it will make due with fewer if the lighting is bad. The best suggestions I have for this are:
  • Put the camera further away so that it's harder for an object to be in the scene for a small number of frames.
  • Give the camera better lighting.

If I remember correctly, rules will trigger ~7-8 seconds after the event happens. This isn't just the starter edition, but is simply a limitation of the algorithms we use.
