Val,
You can do it, but it's not the easiest thing in the world since it's different depending on your version of Windows and your user name. ...and it requires knowing how to create a batch file.
You'll want your batch file to contain two lines that look something _similar_ to this:
--
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vitamin D Video"
start "VitaminD" "Vitamin D Agent.exe" --backEnd "C:\Users\myUserName\AppData\Local\Vitamin D Video"
--
The first line sets the current working directory to the directory I installed Vitamin D Video into. I'm running on a 64-bit version of Windows, so by default that is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vitamin D Video"
The second line starts the "Vitamin D Agent" and tells it that it should start the back end (all of the background processes). It needs to tell the back end where it should store data. Usually the main application figures this out for you, in this case we need to do it manually. The line above assumes that you're running Windows Vista and your user name is 'myUserName'. You can find the data folders for other versions of Windows here:

P.S. If you have a need to quit Vitamin D Video's back end gracefully, you can do it with the commands:
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vitamin D Video"
"Vitamin D Agent.exe" --quit
...it's not a good idea to do this if the main application is running, though...
