DVD just stopped working!!

by catnamedog » Sun Nov 04, 2012 5:20 pm

Hi
I have the basic VDV (2 cameras) I bought around a year and a half ago. It is always on, working in the background monitoring my driveway. Well, I was on the 'net last night when a screen came up telling me that VDV had encountered a problem and needed to close. I let it, restarted my PC, and have since not only failed to launch VDV, but have uninstalled it several times and reinstalled it, but get the same result; I double click the icon on the desktop, and the "busy" eggtimer starts and stops, and starts and stops etc., etc. If I monitor the Windows Task Manager, it shows the VDV Agent appearing and disappearing every few seconds, like its trying to launch.
Does anyone have any helpful suggestions please?
Thanks in advance

Sorry you're having trouble. Have you recently installed any new software (particularly anti-virus or firewall software) or done any OS updates/upgrades?

Unfortunately since you can't start VDV I can't have you submit a bug report which gives us recent logs, but if it's not too much trouble you could manually send me the log files. I think you have my email address from earlier (let me know if not). The log files are located at "C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Vitamin D Video\logs" on Windows XP and "C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Vitamin D Video\logs" on windows Vista and higher. If you need help with how to send those let me know.

When I've run into this sort of problem, whether at home or work, it's usually something that's gone wrong with Windows. It sometimes just breaks, and won't run one or more programs properly. In that sort of case I've spent tons of time trying to fix it, but the solution has always been to just reinstall Windows fresh, and reinstall the applications.

Hopefully that's not the case for you, since it is a hassle to reinstall, but if you find yourself spending too much time troubleshooting the issue I'd cut my losses and start fresh.

Thanks chaps.
Ryan; my mail server won't let me send more than a piddling amount of data in one go. Can you please be specific about which files you want, or I could send the logs folder contents as single files if you need them all.

Hi Ryan
I've sent you the logs in 3 emails. Hopefully you can advise me on getting my VDV back on the road. It's a really great program, and I really miss the protection it offers.
Thanks
Ken

For anybody who comes across this post with a similar issue, this was a problem with ZoneAlarm blocking network and disk access to VDV.

Hi Ryan
Thanks to your deduction, and the really great help from ZoneAlarm, the problem is now fixed. As you say, the problem was caused by my subscription renewal of ZA. As well as renewing, ZA also added additional protection. It saw VDV as a "suspect" program, and limited its operation (without causing harm, I might add. It just prevented any possible problem arising from this "stranger").
I was instructed on how to get ZA to work with VDV, and lo and behold, up she came!!
So, my really great CCTV program and my really great antivirus and protection program are working together.
Much happiness.
Thanks to everyone.
