I have V configured to send a text message to my cell phone when a rule is triggered. These text messages routinely arrive hours after being sent.
I just learned that sending text messages to my phone using SMTP is the reason the text messages are late. (And therefore useless.)
For fast SMS delivery, V must have an SMS client built-in. Please add this so that text messaging to cell phones works as expected.

I think you're going to be out of luck here. Getting VDV to add an SMS client would be difficult and costly. As far as I know, it's not free to send SMS directly like that. In fact, many major websites don't use direct SMS clients and instead use the email solution.
It may be possible that to get Google Voice to help you here if you're in the US and if you're willing to do some fooling around. It is free and is hooked straight into the SMS system. I think that the trick is something like this:
1. Create a Google Voice account. Don't associate this google voice w/ your cell phone.
2. Set your Google Voice to forward text messages to an email address.
3. From your cell phone that you want paged, send a text message to your Google Voice account.
4. Check your email. You've now got an email address you can use to send a text message to your cell. This will only work for sending email from that specific email address to that specific cell phone.
5. Try using that email address in VDV.
I can't promise you that it will work (I don't have an extra cell phone lying around, and my google voice is already associated with my cell phone). ...but I think it should.
