Not saving footage....Am I expecting too much?

by the1lemming » Mon Sep 24, 2012 8:23 am

I have now had Vitamin D for a couple of months and I have to say that I am confused by it.

I thought that if I set up a rule to record something then the software would save that incident for me to view at a later date. I am able to view the specific footage created by my rule.

I also thought that if I set up a specific date to keep on-going recording footage that old footage would be deleted on a rolling basis to save Hard Drive space.

The bit that I am confused about is that all old footage in particular cases where I detect people moving about, irrespective of fitting any rules or not, is not saved anywhere and that all the data is simply deleted. Should this happen?

Or have I got my software set up wrong?

Hi the1lemming,

Are you sure that the rules for the clips you still expect to be there have "save" as a response option? Please also note that this option must be enabled when the rule triggered the clip (responses aren't applied retroactively).

http://www.vitamindinc.com/support/ref_ ... tions.html provides some details on how this works.

What is your disk space limit set to, and how many cameras are you recording? How old are these cases? If you go back past the "cache" duration, you should see some clips present, these would be saved. If your problem is that clips from a week ago exist, but not from a month ago, you might simply need to increase your storage limit.

Hope that helps,

Hello

Thank you for replying. For your first comment I think that I enabled the save option when I created the rule. I've got a little floppy disk icon which I'm assuming hints that things are being saved.
As for my disk, I do not have any limits especially as it is a 1Tb hard drive. I only have one camera which is a video CCTV connected to my computer via USB.

This all may be user error but for something so simple I can't see where I have messed stuff up. I am also concerned that my footage does not have a date-time stamp on it as I think this information would be very useful if I had to provide evidence in a courtroom environment.

I may just wipe my computer clean, install Zone Minder and see if this provides any better results.

Cheers

Did you tell VDV that it can use more space? The default is 25 gigs, if your camera is high resolution it might consume most of this with cache (depending on what you have the cache value set to), not leaving much room for clips.
