Thanks for the advice. It took a while for me to go further because my main computer was dead for a few day, but now all is back and I tried again. This time it worked and the reason is a strange one.
I followed you advice and downloaded again.
Normally, I would just drag the app directly to the apps folder in the finder, but this time, following your instructions word for word, I dragged it to “the application folder shortcut next to it”. Of course that put it into the apps folder in the finder, but for some reason, the difference was significant. This time I did not get the error message, and the app opened normally when I clicked on it in the app folder in the finder. (I left the .dmg where it was, I did not throw it out.)
This is all very odd for me, since I have dragged apps directly to the finder folder many times over many years. Perhaps it is a unique situation with my old Apple MacBook Air, or perhaps it is something new to the latest OS update that I have, 10.13.5
Sighthound’s instructions are excellent, but they don’t mention this, that you must drag it to the shortcuts folder and not directly to the apps folder in the finder. Perhaps someone there would like to test it with other systems.
Anyway, thanks for the advice.
