How many cameras??

by JesseS » Sun Apr 22, 2018 12:06 pm

I am running a dedicated iMAC 2.5 GHz quad-core i5 with 12GB RAM and a 256GB SSD.(FTP clip storage) I have 9 cameras using about 75% CPU, memory pressure is low with no page swapping. My question is how many more cameras can I realistically add? My plans call for 16 total but I don't think the i5 is going to cut it.

Hello,

Looking a your current CPU usage, you current machine will unlikely be able to handle 16 cameras. You can find another setup of a user who is running 25-30 cameras at the post below:

You can also find more example at the bottom of the link below:

Resolution is a factor here as well. The CPU usage will rise exponentially as the resolution grows, and will depend quite a bit on the amount of activity in the scenes as well.

To emphasize, CPU is just a part of the story here. Storage, and potentially, network equipment may prove to be just as critical to the success of such a deployment. Stability and quality of the cameras will also be important.

I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, thank you!

Regards,
-Kevin

Kevin, storage is not a problem as I utilize a 16TB server via direct network connection. I don't normally need the 4K resolution and most cameras are at 1080P, I just installed the tenth camera and all are working well with no drop outs. I may just get another iMAC for the rest as it is cheaper (referb) than building a single larger system. My network is all GB CAT6 hardwired with a smart switch and 16 ch POE injector. Oh, and thanks for the update with MUCH faster search function, as along with the SSD's it is very fast.
