I was having a lot of trouble with slow video switching between clips or searching on a dedicated iMac i5 with a 500Gb HD. Replaced that with a 2 TB SSD for both the system files and video storage and now the clips show up and play almost instantly, much better. So if you have this issue, especially on a system with a lot of storage for clips, you might try this fix.
