Using mobile app internal / external

by stumper66 » Sun Feb 11, 2018 6:32 pm

I have my router forwarding the port used by SightHound. I have DDNS updating an external hostname.

If I configure the app to logon with the external hostname I can never get it to connect when I'm home on the wi-fi, unless I logout and log back in with the internal server name.
However that will break it next time I want to pull up the app outside of the house.

What is the best solution to have it use my internal address while on my wi-fi and the public hostname elsewhere?

Hello,

Have you enabled your mobile app for switching? Currently if you enable switching, you will need to log into both internal and external and enable them separately. Switching isn't a global setting right now which is why you have to enable it twice.

You can enable switching by clicking the 3 bars to the top left then click settings and finally toggle the switching button. Can you please give that a try.

If you already have switching on and it isn't working, can you please click Help > Report a Problem from the machine that is running Sighthound? Thank you!

Regards,
-Kevin

I have this exact setup (Sighthound running on the int. machine with forwarded ports and with DDNS). I don't have to anything special and exactly the same app config works internally & externally.

I believe router must support Hairpin NAT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairpinning). I am using Shibby Tomato based router.

In my settings, I don't have an option for switching. I only have the following options:
push notifications, show boxes around objects, play clips as streams, HLS/H.264 live streams.

I ended up getting a high-end router and the problem is resolved, but it would be nice if the app could work around this for non high-end routers.

I also have this problem -- can only access via 'internal' when connected to home wifi, and only via 'external' when outside of home wifi. Really need a solution -- either a way to enter two IP addresses (failover behaviour) in login screen, or whatever this "switching" feature is supposed to be.
My current app version is 1.4 (29) for Android version 7.0, which is the latest available in app store.

Just noticed that the iPad app at least has an 'internal/external' switching option in the settings, but the Android one does not! Please implement this critical feature in the Android version.
