What version can I download for OS X 10.9.5?

by mlevin77 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 11:04 am

Is there a version that works with Apple OS X 10.9.5? This page

https://www.sighthound.com/surveillance-for-mac

suggests yes (since 10.7), but which of the older versions should I download?

Hello,

So you can find the System Requirements to run the current version of Sighthound at the link below:

https://www.sighthound.com/support/system-requirements

Since you OSX is so old, you can only run Sighthound 4.0 or below. We do not recommend this since we have released a lot of new features and bug fixes in the newer releases of Sighthound. However, you should be able to run it on your Mac. You can download this specific version by going to the link below and clicking "Looking for a previous version?" under Download Sighthound Video.

Can you please give that a try? Feel free to let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, thank you!

Regards,

Thanks Kevin!! Question: when I run it, it asks for the admin password - why - what's it doing that a user-level application can't do? I don't usually let any external applications make edits to the system (with admin password). Do you know what it's trying to do and if it's possible to run it without admin privileges?

Hey,

It is creating a folder where all of your videos and logs will live as shown below:

/Library/Application Support/Sighthound Video/

Sighthound isn't messing with anything else besides that. Does that help? Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, thank you!

aha; I don't want it recording in /Library - I have an external drive to which the videos need to go, I don't want it taking up room on my system drive and certainly don't want to have these data in a system directory. Is there a way to specify a different destination for saving the video content, and thus avoid having to give it admin rights? Thank you!

Hello,

You can definitely save your videos externally. However, you will still need to give Sighthound privileges since it will still need to save important data there like camera information, logs and licensing information. You can learn how to export your video at the links below:

Saving clips that are invoked by a rule:
https://www.sighthound.com/support/export-local-folder

You may change the video storage location by going to "Tools --> Options" on Windows and "Sighthound Video --> Preferences" on OSX. Then going to Storage and clicking "Move video..."

Does that help? Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, thank you!

Thank you. Unfortunately I think that means I can't use this software - I wanted to deploy it on computers in our research center, but we have a security policy against installing code that asks for admin privileges. There's no real reason for it anyway - it should be able to record where-ever the user wants, like in a subdirectory inside the home folder, which then wouldn't need admin password. If you release a version without needing admin rights, I think lots of customers would appreciate that - software shouldn't ask for admin privileges unless it's really doing something essential in system folders.

We do apologize for any inconvenience. Sighthound is a service that needs admin privileges. It is unlikely that this will ever change as well.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with.

To clarify further, privileged access is required at install time to allow instillation of the service which allows SV to begin recording on system startup rather than only once a user is logged in, and to continue recording when users log out.

ah, now it makes sense. We have machines that stay up 24*7 and are never logged out, so we don't need this feature. If there's ever an option/version to use it without privileged access, I'd be happy to consider the software for deployment here.
