Hey Steve,

I can definitely extend your trial. Can you please send us an email at [email protected] referencing this forum? Once we receive that, we will enable your account for another trial period. We will be standing by for your email, thank you~

Regards,

-Kevin

Steve unless they gave you the Pro version testing with the trial version will not be accurate at all. The resolution in the trial version is limited. So your bandwith utilization will not be representative of real world performance.

So, thanks to all who chimed in. And, thanks to the staff at SightHound for extending my trial period. I now have 17 cameras, all Hikvision 4k. Most are set at 1080p and some are set at 4k. I am using around 38% CPU usage at the top end and in the low 20's in the low end. I am very pleased with the performance, so much so that I pulled the trigger and purchased the pro version. I did this after purchasing a Blue Iris license and trying it out. SightHound to me is much better.

I do have a couple of questions:

1) what codec should I be using for playback of saved videos on a remote computer? I notice that on the machine the software is installed on they play back without adding anything to media player.

2) when remotely downloading a video, the resolution is not as good as the same video downloaded on the host machine. Normal or how do I get the higher resolution remotely?

Thanks!

Hey switz,

Glad things are working out for you. Good call on Hikvision -- one of the most stable brands in our experience.

To answer your questions:
1) Downloaded clips will always be H264. Most modern OSs should be able to play it without installing additional software, though we are partial to using VLC in all cases, rather than OS bundled players. Of course, the browsers should be able to play the clips as well via the SV web app.
2) Quality of the downloaded clips is settable via Tools -> Options -> Remote Access -> Advanced -> Clip Video Quality. For most users Original is the way to go, which will provided the clips as the came from the cameras, without re-encoding. Everything else, including addition of time or bounding boxes overlay, will result in re-encoding, which in addition to slowing down the access will also affect the quality.

Hope this helps,
- Alex

Thanks for the reply Alex,
Simple change on the playback video. Works perfectly.

And, I couldn't agree more on the Hikevision cameras. Great price and build quality. Perfect performance too.

I am impressed with your support.

This is for Alex:

I am going to install an outdoor camera looking at a parking lot. What is needed for the license plate reader? Is this a plug-in for Sighthound?

Thanks,
steve

I just wanted to post an update:

My system has been on 24/7 for months now without and issues at all. There have been no system crashes, which I had all the time with my low-resolution Geovision system, and my CPU usage is still causing me no problems at all with it running in the low 20's to high 30's. I am running all Hikevision 4K cameras (17 so far) with most at 1080p and some at full 4K. I am very impressed with all aspects of the computer version as well as remote viewing on a laptop.

The only issue I have is the Android app. I can see the cameras on the tiled view but get no video when I try to only show one camera. I would like this fixed but it is no way a deal breaker.

All in all, I am still impressed with this software and its use.

Hi Steve, I was wondering if you could provide the model number of the Hikivision 4k cameras you are using. I am looking to upgrade to 4k cameras and since you found success with some I would like to know which ones they are since I know someone had no issues with them.

Thanks!
