Remote access with VPN

by flynreelow » Thu Dec 07, 2017 9:20 pm

I used to Port Forward with my Netgear Router to view my Sighthound Cams.

Now I set up a VPN (built into my netgear router)

I go back on the computer under Remote access, and put in my user name and pass. Confused about the port, as I am not fwding any of the ports. I tried port 8000. I hit apply, and test the local ip on a web browser. Works fine.

But when I am trying to view this same think with my android phone, with the same credentials (local ip with 8000) it doesnt work?

Can I get some help?

Looks like this works with port 8848.

Did a quick google search, and it looks like this is a backdoor to udp/tcp.

Is this secure.

I have not port fwd this in my router settings, but it still seems to work.

Is there another option?

Many people say to not use this port...

Hello,

That is the default port that we use. So if you are able to hit Sighthound with that, you should be fine. If you want to use any other port, you will have to forward it. You can find instructions on how to do this by finding your router at the link below:

https://portforward.com/router.htm

Although, if port 8848 is working, I wold just stick with that. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, thank you!

Regards,

-Kevin
