V 5.0 Check for updates does not work

by willfly » Fri Jul 07, 2017 8:30 pm

From after upgrading to v4.0.4 and V5, the Sighthound "Check for updates" function does not appear to work. After selecting, a dialog box appears:

"The update server could not be reached. Please ensure you are connected to the internet and try again."

There is no 3rd party firewall installed, the macOS 10.12.5 firewall is disabled.

All other function under the help menu on Sighthound work properly, including the License information.

Manual download and installation of updates works.

Local and Remote access using the iOS app works.

macOS 10.12.5
mac mini Late 2012 core i7
16 GB memory.

Checking for updates is a simple outgoing https request, the same as licensing. If it fails it indicates that either the outbound request was blocked, a timeout occurred, or that the returned data was somehow corrupted en route. If this continues occurring for you after a system reboot please submit a bug report from "Help->Report a Problem..." after checking for updates and receiving the could not be reached message.

Ryan,

Thanks for your quick reply.

The problem with checking for updates existed V4.x and V5.0.

I believe I have solved the problem. I was poking around /Application Support/Sighthound Video and found a file called "updater.txt".

The contents of the file is:

"http://vdvbeta:[email protected]/update/publicbeta"

When I moved this file to desktop and checked for updates again, the error message no longer appears. I get an "Up to date" Message.

A new "updater.txt" file was not created.

I've been a customer since the early days of Vitamin D. Other files and logs remain from long ago. Should I do a clean install? If so, what would you recommend?

That would certainly do it. Thanks for being a customer for so long. I don't believe there is a need to do a clean install unless you're encountering an issue. The update file you mention is the only override file that was ever used so there shouldn't be anything else of impact.
