Speed!

by terryharman » Thu Jun 15, 2017 4:03 pm

Hello,

Your software is great, since moving over to Sighthound I have caught almost all motion on my drive with very little false positives.

HOWEVER

Everyone in the home complains about the speed of the mobile app. I have timed it and it takes about 20secs to get the stream going in fullscreen mode. While this may not sound long, when someone has rung on the doorbell and I want to see who it is, 20secs later when I get the live feed, the person has already walked off!

The bitrates are both a 0.5mbs running on a gigabit switch. 16 core Xenon server with 112GB or RAM so in terms of the hardware it would be hard to get any better.

While I'm on the subject of stature requests, can you also group the same 'event' for example, I was outside today and the camera caught me, but I was standing outside talking to someone. The camera created me 10 clips!

Thank You!

Hi Terry,

We've got a lot of changes in testing at the moment that make live stream connections quite speedy so you'll hopefully have a better experience for that in your hands before too long.

Events - We store video as a (conceptually) continual feed. Clip segmentation as it appears in the UI depends on the currently selected rule. As long as the rule is constantly firing a single clip will be shown. If there is a break in the rule, such as when searching for all objects anywhere if A leaves the scene and there is a second gap before B enters, that will divide the presentation resulting in one clip for A and one for B despite the relatively close timing.

This is generally done for a few reasons including to prevent all items from winding up in a gigantic clip and to facilitate a rapid up and down arrow scanning of the days events. It can cause some excess if you have a boundary or region rule and an object wavers directly on the line.

Depending on the rule you were using and your scene there may be an adjustment that would give you the desired behavior, but we'll certainly consider additional user tweakable options going forward.
