Storage configuration

by zombywoof » Thu Apr 13, 2017 8:04 am

Hi all,
I have SH running on a W10 AMD A8-based system with 2 HDDs, 250G for the OS and 1TB for video storage and 2 cameras, both HKVision, one at 2mpx and the other at 4mpx.
During processing SH appears to use the User\account\AppData\Local\...\[clipnum].mp4 for temporary processing (per camera) before writing to the main storage (for me on the E:drive).
My OS drive is, in fact about half the performance of the storage drive (because I thought that once the app was loaded it would not really go to the OS drive much) and, because of this, it seems like it's a bottleneck in the video processing.
So:
a. can the location of the 'temporary' files be changed? Maybe to a small 3rd SSD, for example?
b. can the location be changed to RAM or a RAMdrive (same q as a. really)
c. my dedicated video HDD is 'only' a WD blue. Would a Black (or other 7200RPM drive) give me significantly better performance?

Yes, if you are running a Windows PC you can create a "Junction" to point a filename in one folder at another folder/drive. This forum thread:

https://www.sighthound.com/forums/topic12202/page10.html

USED TO contain full instructions for how to do it, but that part of the thread got deleted (dunno who dunnit).

Maybe you can glean enough from what remains to figure it out, or someone can chime in that knows better than I how to do it. Seems to me you can do it manually if you know the commands to type, but there was a program (free) that made it easy.

Take a look at this post in that thread, most of the original content was recreated with basic instructions.
