High CPU Usage

by Pinuccio » Mon Feb 20, 2017 1:25 am

Hello, I run Sighthound on a mac mini with an IP-ONVIF-Camera. The camera runs at a resolution of 1920x1080 with 25FPS and a Bitrate of 2048 kpbs (VBR). The camera sends a h264-videostream.

The CPU-Usage as shown in the terminal or activity monitor is about 20%.
Compared with other solutions like SecuritySpy or IP Camera Viewer the CPU-Usage is rather high. Other solutions uses only 3-5% of CPU with the same configuration.
Why is that ? Where is the difference ?

Hi Pinuccio,

As far as I'm aware, those other programs don't have computer vision. This isn't just a marketing term, it means that with Sighthound Video the computer is watching all of the video feeds connected to your computer and trying to spot when a human is in the frame. So it is watching all the time and using complex mathematics to work out if something in the feed is a person. Thus it uses more processing power than camera viewing software with a motion detector. Knowing that something moved is a far easier task than knowing what it is.

We try to explain this in our marketing pages: https://www.sighthound.com/products/sighthound-video

We'll take a look to see if we can better explain how Sighthound Video is different to other products.

Thanks for the feedback,

Stephen Neish
