New subscriber - Remote Access Port Problems

by kmpowell » Sun Jan 15, 2017 10:50 am

Hi

For the past 4 years I have been using iCamsource, but with new 1080p cameras recently purchased I decided to bin iCamsource and upgrade to Sighthound so I could use full resolution capability. I downloaded Sighthound to test it, and I was so impressed I purchased a licence. All is working well, but for the life of me I cannot get the Remote Access function to work on my iPhone through the app (connected to 4G)...

Setup as follows:
- iMac running Mac OS 10.12.2
- Sky UK Broadband with SkyHub
- iPhone 6S+ running the App, on 3UK.

On iCamsource it always showed (see snippet below) the port forwarding to be 12000, so I assumed it would be that...

So I set-up the preferences in SH as follows:

The local address and internal address both work, but no external address ever displays, and I don't know what the external address should be for the APP. Is it not the same as the internal address?!?

I've logged into my router and the UPnP port map table looks like this:

I'm fairly tech, but not so much when it comes to detail such as this, so any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks
Kevin

Hello kmpowell,

The port number requested for remote access should be a number that is not being used by any other device or application. It looks like 12000 is already being used by your iCamsource, so you will want to select a different number. We typically recommend 8848, 9000, 9090, etc...

Are you able to connect to the Internal Address from a computer or mobile device that is on the same network as the computer running Sighthound Video? If yes, we should be able to forward a port in your router to connect remotely. Please send us the manufacturer and model number of your router and we'll send specific directions on how to do so.

Regards,

-Devin

Hi Devin

Thanks for the reply.

I can connect to the internal addresses (I've tried lots of port numbers and they all work in the browser) fine using most port numbers, it's when I use the app on 4G that it times out on connection.

My router is a standard Sky Hub http://www.sky.com/shop/broadband-talk/sky-hub/

Thanks
Kevin

Not sure if this will help but for some reason the installer for Sighthound doesn't add the right rules to the firewall for external access when it is first installed.

Follow these steps to whitelist all of the exe's in the program folder so that it can properly communicate to your router and then the internet:

Hello Kevin,

Here's a port forward guide for your router. Please add a rule for remote access, similar to how you created the upnp portmap rule: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/content/ ... vices.html

Note that the external address in the remote access settings page will not appear, even after successfully forwarding a port, as Sighthound was unable to open the port on it's own. Instead, you can find the external address by visiting whatsmyip.org from inside the network. You should then be able to connect from a computer or mobile device that is not connected to the network by entering the external address with the forwarded port number (external.ip.address:port). An easy way to test this external address is with a smart phone with WiFi disabled.

If you are using the mobile app it will remember the address, so you only need to enter it once.

Thanks Devin - I didn't set any UpNp rule, it did it automatically.

I'll have a bash at this but I'm not 100% confident.

I'll let you know how it goes.
