How do you make audio work on 4.0

by harmer007 » Thu Jan 05, 2017 2:39 pm

I just upgraded to 4.0 version. Audio does not appear to be recording with the video. My 2 cameras hooked up to sighthound (on basic edition) are a foscam FI9831P and a Samsung SmartCam HD Pro 1080p Full-HD Wi-Fi Camera. I did see under the release notes that states "Audio support for that use the AAC codec." Does anyone know if these cameras should support recording audio? I would think that at least one of them should....my foscam records sound with its own interface.....but I get no sound recording through the sighthound program. Same thing for my Smartcam....no sound is recording through the sighthound program.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thanks for the help. Or maybe I misunderstood the release notes.....does 4.0 record both audio and video now....or still just records video, but no sound.

Audio should "just work", nothing you need to enable or configure in Sighthound Video. Please check that your cameras support and are configured to send AAC audio. If so and you are still having trouble please send a bug report from "Help->Report a Problem..." and we'll see if any issues show up in the diagnostic info.

Hi Ryan. Well, from looking at the audio information on both the foscam and the smartcam when going into VLC player....it says the codec information for both of these cameras records in

H264-MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(H264) foscam
H264-MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(avc1) smartcam

I don't know much about this stuff and I can't find anywhere about AAC codec for these cameras. Based off of what I have found, would you say it is fair to say these cameras don't support AAC codec?

Thanks again Ryan for the help.

Actually, maybe this is the audio information:

Foscam....I also see under VLC player when playing video files: PCM S16 LE(araw) I only get sound through the Foscam downloading video files to my computer...but no sound through sighthound and the video it is recording.

Smartcam.....I get no sound at all so I don't see anything other than H264-MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(avc1)

But I get sound with the Smartcam through my phone app.

For your Foscam, as the audio is PCM it isn't currently expected to be recorded with SV 4.0 and from a quick search it doesn't seem that an AAC setting is available for that model.

The Smartcam is interesting that you don't get sound in VLC but do with their custom app. That seems to imply that they have a different and isolated audio stream they're connecting to apart from the video, although I'm not sure why they would opt for such an odd/unnecessary separation. I'm having trouble locating a manual or views of the configuration pages for this cam, but I assume you already poked around for any possible audio settings. Are you connecting to this camera via autodetection/ONVIF? If so and there are multiple streams to choose from it may be worth giving one of the substreams a shot in case they decided to include audio there, but I'm not overly optimistic.

Sorry I don't have better news for you at the moment. Our current focus is on AAC as the majority of cameras sold in the past 5-8 years support H264 video and AAC audio. It is possible we may add support for legacy audio formats such as PCM for your Foscam, but if the audio stream is really separate from the video stream on the Samsung cam it's unlikely we'll be able to add the model specific features to support that.

Thanks Ryan for looking into it. I will try to poke around with the Smartcam more and see what I can find for settings. I will let you know if I find anything using the information/advice you have given above.

Yep...it does not look like it is going to work with Smartcam either. I managed to login from the website (forgot about doing that).....only 1 live stream (and it does have sound on that stream) but no options to change streams that I see.

Oh well, at least the video and detection works with Sighthound which is the most important thing anyway.

Thanks Ryan again for the help. Hopefully, PCM audio is something you guys could add in down the road like you mentioned. Thanks again.
