Trouble Adding Cameras

by emjay » Sun Nov 13, 2016 1:50 pm

I am trying to set up Sighthound on a brand new Windows 10 PC. I am trying to set it up with either a Logitech c920 and a Logitech c922. When adding a new camera, the list of USB cameras is empty most of the time, but will populate now and then. When the list does populate, I can select either camera but it does not connect to it on the preview screen and the webcam light does not go on. If I complete the webcam setup even though it does not connect and restart the software, the webcam light will go on as but the software will still say it can't connect. I have install and updated all drivers, closed all other applications, uninstalled anti-virus software, and tried all available USB ports but still cannot get it to work.

Other webcam apps can access the camera fine.

What can I do to get this to work? Are these camera's supported?

I have had great difficulty getting two (or more) of the same brand/model of USB Webcam to work at the same time. I have several different brands of cameras all happy with each other, but if they are the same brand then there is a problem... Logitec is the only brand where I have been able to get two different models to work simultaneously.

MY "theory" is that drivers for USB Webcams do not enumerate multiple instances of cameras (the programmers never figured anyone would have more than one WebCam on one computer so why write the code to enumerate them?) so all that are of the same brand/model will be assigned the same name. Sighthound refers to them by name and they both have the same name, so the operating system randomly picks one of them from which to return the data to Sighthound.

Sometimes I get the two to work okay for a few minutes, then one Sighthound thumbnail display will change to show the other camera or they will simply swap which camera is showing in the two windows. I eventually either get a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), or the computer will spontaneously reboot, or everything simply freezes... i.e.: no keyboard or mouse control and my on-screen clock program (a program I wrote to have the time/date show in large characters on-screen) stops... and I have to jerk it's power line out of the socket to get its attention (never a nice thing to do to a computer, but sometimes it is the only way).

My system (an older never-updated Windows 7 system... no internet connection) is presently down (dead harddrive) and I am not near my notes to be able to tell you which two Logitec cameras I have managed to get to work together... I know one is a cheap one (A C-270, I think), and the other is a really, really cheap one (A 'C-120', I think). I have had several HP, Microsoft and other brands of cameras and only Logitec cameras (of different models) will work simultaneously... the others are strictly one of any particular brand at a time. Even two Logitec of the same model will not play together.

I don't know if a C-920 and a C-922 will be play nice together or not.

What "Name" is assigned to them on the System level? ("All Settings", "Devices", "Connected Devices")

I only want one of them, the c922 to be connected. I'm using the c920 as part of my troubleshooting to ensure that it's not the camera. I've now also tried a Microsoft LifeCam VX-2000, which I have used with the software in the past. For some reason, after installing the LifeCam, all 3 cameras should up in the camera list and worked in the preview step. Once added however, it still would not connect (camera lights on, but Sighthound still searching for camera). I then decided to restart the software, and once again no cameras are shown in the drop down. It's super frustrating and confusing.

The assigned names are all normal, "C922 Pro Stream Webcam", "Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920", and "LifeCam VX-2000".

I wonder if Windows 10 is the culprit? The last time I used this software I was on 7 or 8. My camera privacy settings are open so the OS shouldn't be blocking it.

I've now installed Sighthound on my other PC. This system ran Sighthound a few years ago on Windows 8 with the Microsft Webcam. It is now running Windows 10. This system is having the exact same issues as the brand new system. I'm almost certain it's a Windows 10 problem - is anyone else using Win10?

I've resolved the problem by installing an older version (2.2). This allowed me to add the camera without any problems. I then updated to the current version and the configuration carried over and is working correctly.

So the issue was with the latest version of the software - there is a bug for adding new cameras.

I hope this gets fixed soon - I plan on upgrading my subscription and do not want to have to downgrade and re-upgrade every time I add a new camera.
