url and mobile app

by Karl_S » Fri Nov 04, 2016 11:18 am

To overcome a changing IP, I have a dynamic dns set up and point a domain to my house. Also, since my wife's employer blocks all ports except the standard web page ports (80, 443, etc.), I set up to use a subdomain (example: sh.mydoman.net) working for the browser. This is allowing me to show the Sighthound Video page over port 80 using a reverse proxy setup and Apache. I would like the mobile app to use a URL instead of the IP as well. It does not have to be the same URL as the browser uses, and can pass the port if needed. I can set up the URL as a CNAME, etc. if needed as well, but it appears the mobile app (I'm on Android) will only accept an IP. Is there a way around this so I do not have to change the apps settings whenever my public side IP changes? Currently my option is to use the phone's browser and view the cameras from there. I would like to take advantage of the mobile app and all the programmer's hard work, though, as the use is easier.

(Note: I am currently 1 day into the 14 day trial)

Regards,
Karl_S

did support ever get back to you (maybe by email? It kind of concerns me when I see a technical support request that has not been answered for almost a month. Makes me second guess considering this software due to lack of support from the developer's.

I cannot say they definitely did not as I had posts for a few different items I was setting up in various forums at that time for a few different products. I know I had a message stating a URL was not allowed for some product, but cannot find it and have 3 products using the external IP, so I cannot be sure it is was Sighthound. I am fairly certain, however, that the answer is that I cannot use a URL at all, let alone with a sub domain.

Hello smyers and Karl_S,

You should be able to connect using a DDNS address. What DDNS service are you using? Are you able to connect using this DDNS address in a web browser?

One other user had this issue with no-ip and we found that he had to have it configured as a DNS Host instead of a Web Redirect in order to connect. topic11505?hilit=ddns#p14186

I was looking to use a subdomain. After reeading your post above I just realized the mobile app is using a different port, so I was able to use the primary domain. Yes, it did work that way. Thank you!

So it must be some other application which is is/was requiring the IP.
