Requirements for a new setup. Intel NUC?

by blackomega31 » Tue Oct 25, 2016 3:06 pm

I am setting up sighthound at my house. My plan is for 6-7 2mp ip cameras. Im looking for ideas as to what i will need for the server in terms of requirements.

I have been looking at the Intel Nuc computers and you can get one with an I7.

Any thoughts?

We've updated the examples in the system requirements article to reflect 4.0 which hopefully give you an idea of processing power required for different scenarios. Actual requirements can vary with different cameras, scenes, and activity levels, but these should be representative a typical home installation.

Any of the NUCs, even the dual core i3/i5 variants, should be able to get you 8+ hd cameras. The quad core i7 even more, though for 10+ you'll want to make sure you have at least 16 gigs of RAM and a speedy storage drive. There will be a number of places to buy NUC+cameras+SV bundles this year, they're a nice little form factor if you're looking for a machine to tuck away in a corner or attach to the bottom of a desk.

I was going to start a new thread, but this one may be a good place to start. Have Sightsound (or anyone else) had any experience running on one of these cheap mini PC's (running Win10 on an Intel Atom, Celeron, Cherry Trail etc), around 100 bucks, as a dedicated recorder? You can add a decent size SD card or attach a SSD via USB for bigger storage, and they're fan-less, so totally quiet. I thought it might be a great way to build a dedicated stand-alone system, say 4-8 cameras max, set it going and let it do its thing. I love SV when I have tried it but haven't been able to get past the idea of running it on my PC because I don't want it slowing my PC down while I work, and I don't have a spare I could use that's fast/reliable enough. I'd be prepared to stump up for a mini-PC and leave it running as a dedicated machine sitting on the corner of my desk as it wouldn't interfere with our normal work in any way.

This is the kind of thing I mean: https://www.amazon.it/Beelink-Z83-II-Wi ... KAG688KG6N
