FTP images insecure

by DaleS » Fri Jun 24, 2016 9:16 pm

Captured images can be uploaded via ftp (which requires logging in with your user id/password to a server).

However this isn't secure as there is no encryption on the connection.

Is it possible to upload with encryption?

Hello DaleS,

If you are not comfortable with FTP uploading you can use our Export to local folder feature to export clips to a local folder, which you can sync with any upload service of your choice. Many customers use this with Google Drive and Dropbox for example.

Details on this feature can be found at https://www.sighthound.com/support/export-local-folder

Unfortunately, secure FTP doesn’t seem to be an option in the current release. Also, “Export to local folder” adds additional disk space overhead besides the need to manage files in the local folder.

One scenario that I used to mitigate the risk of exposing the FTP credentials is creating and using a limited FTP user that has the privilege to upload files to FTP but cannot delete files. This will at least prevent deleting the uploaded files should the user credentials got exposed.

I hope that the system developers add the support for secure FTP the soonest given that transmitting clear-text passwords is a major weakness.
