Remote Access - Skin not a valid file type

by KrOevG » Fri Feb 05, 2016 5:16 pm

In the last 2 weeks when using the remote access of Sighthound I can get the live camera view but I cannot use clips. The thumbnails are there but when I click to view a video it comes up with "Error loading skin: Skin not a valid file type".

I have been using remote access previously with no problems. I have not updated Sighthound, I have tried in Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer and its the same in all of them. I have also formatted my PC and reinstalled Sighthound and its the same.

Running version 2.0.4 build 13894

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello KrOevG,

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. Version 2.0.4 is a fairly old version of Sighthound. Is there a reason you haven't updated to the latest version? You may be encountering a bug that has already been fixed in our updates.

Regards,

-Devin

I am still on the starter edition. I only have 1 low res camera so I didn't see the point in upgrading. Version 2.0.4 is one of the later versions with remote access in the starter edition. As I said, its all been running great for months but suddenly I've been having this problem and I have changed nothing I can think of my end.

I think you're going down the wrong road trying to blame it on an old version. I'm running a slightly newer version and I've been having the exact same error message for the exact same length of time. It has nothing to do with the installed software because it had been working fine for more than a year.

This does indeed have to do with being on old versions of the software. It will not occur in versions of the software 2.3 (released August 2014) and newer. 2.5.1 is the most recent release of the 2.X line and has countless bug fixes and improvements, and would recommend that everyone using version 2 of the software to be using that release.

So am I correct in saying that there has been an update that has essentially disabled remote access in the older Starter Editions that previously had it working? and there is nothing we can do to fix it?

There was no update to disable remote access for starter edition users, however if it is no longer working I'm afraid we aren't able to help resolve that issue. This is not a license type problem, someone with a Basic or Pro license would be experiencing the same errors on 2.0.4.

Remote access was moved to a paid only feature in Sighthound Video 2.2 (June 2014). If we intended to take action on people continuing to use earlier versions we would have done so then. Instead we did our best to make sure people were aware of the change and could remain on earlier versions if desired, making this change the bolded first line of the release notes and in app update dialog.

2.0.4 was released Nov. 20, 2013. It is beyond our capacity to be able to test and support anything but the latest revisions of each major verison, at this time 2.5.1 and 3.0.1. Even if we did it would only expose the myriad of bugs that had already been fixed in the interim, like this was. There were over 1,200 builds of Sighthound Video between 2.0.4 and 2.5.1 (and over 2,000 between 2.0.4 and 3.0.1), leading to a much better product that all 2.X users have access to.

There are a world of new features in 3.0.1 in comparison to 2.0.4, including allowing higher resolutions in Starter Edition, and I'd recommend this upgrade to all users. Either of these will also include a free two week Pro trial. If the unique features of SV are not valuable enough to justify a purchase and you require remote access then I'm afraid we don't currently have an offering that matches your scenario.
