digital zoom

by Dimitri » Mon Jan 04, 2016 2:10 am

When reviewing recorded events, it would be very useful to be able to choose an area of the video to zoom in and out of.

I understand it's a digital zoom, after the fact, but it's still useful. At the moment, I'm forced to export the clip, and zoom it using my video editing software (which is a huge waste of time).

I am in the same boat. I have looked at many software programs for security cameras and all of them have a digital zoom. It is beneficial when looking back at footage. I really like the rest of the software and I think the motion detection capabilities are far superior to most others. Is this being looked at for future upgrades?

Until such is a feature of SightHound (I don't know if it ever will be, I am just a long time satisfied user), I have been using the "Magnifier" program in Windows. Works for both viewing in 'Camera' mode (including seeing the thumbnails of the cameras that are not showing in the main view) as well as in the 'Search' mode. It can be difficult and frustrating to get the magnified view in a position where you can get to the controls and other parts of the SH window. I try to keep the magnifier window to about 1/4 of my screen (My computer is a dedicated system that only runs SightHound.) I have the SH window at nearly full screen, leaving on a small portion of the desktop visible with a portion of the icons of the utilities I use [Magnifier being one of them] visible to click on.

The only problems are: The excessive time to get 'Magnifier' to bring up its window. When started, it has to wait for the OS to get a contiguous block of memory to build the magnified screen image in. The OS has to wait for the various processes presently running (all the SH sub-processes) to reach a point where portions can be moved or swapped to the "swap file" and it can take a long time to get it all collected before 'Magnifier' can do its thing.

The other problem is the magnifier window covering controls I want to click on while viewing the video and the fact that the area being magnified is centered around the location of the mouse arrow so I can't, say, click the "+0:02" control while seeing what happens at the time (the keyboard commands come in handy then!)

I have not noted a great drain on the CPU(s) nor excessive HDD accesses while it runs.

At one time I had it running all the time and covering a block of the thumbnails of some of the cameras to make them appear bigger. Just had to make sure the mouse arrow was positioned correctly to show the magnified thumbnails, when I wasn't otherwise using the mouse. I have too many cameras active now such that I cannot get all their thumbnails in one place small enough to allow the main window to be as big as I want, so I don't use it this way anymore.
