Using Sighthound while connecting to NAS

by moo083 » Fri Nov 13, 2015 10:20 am

Is it possible to set up cameras to just record to a NAS, and then set up a devoted computer with Sighthound? Basically tell Sighthound to connect to a camera by connecting to the NAS and looking at a video stream as it comes in.

Or would I just have to use Sighthound to connect to the cameras and store my data on the NAS as if it were a normal hard drive?

Hi moo083,

Sighthound Video currently only records from live video streams and then manages the data files, it does not import existing videos. Depending on your specific use case one option might be to have Sighthound Video monitor the stream and archive clips matching given rules to a directory on the NAS:

In my case it's not a NAS but pretty much the same I guess.

I'm interested in Sighthound Video, especially because I'm very impressed with the recognition, how the software can detect humans, cars and so on.

However, I already have a running system.
I have some semi-pro cameras installed around my house, connected to a computer in the basement, where everything is stored on a 6TB drive for each camera.
6TB for one camera is enough to record 24/7 at full hd for three months, so I can always check what happend around my house. Even if I went on a longer vacation.
But of course that's a huge amount of video and looking through it by hand is a pain.
Also my cameras make a folder for each day and then a subfolder for each hour with five minute video pieces.
So I have like more than 2000 folders and almost 26000 files.
I really need some software to help me with that.

But I don't want to add my cameras to some software and install everything again.
In addition I might want to watch the files with my laptop one floor above in the livingroom, not sitting around in the dark basement to check my recordings.
I just want to tell the software, here take this folder and all its subfolders with their files, may it be local or a remote machine.
What I need is some way to import, not add cameras.

If your software can't import folders/files, then sadly I guess it's not the right product for me. :(

That's quite the configuration you have set up there. Am not sure how efficient your cameras/software is, or how many cameras you operate. However, dedicating a 6TB/camera is, IMHO, a bit over the top. I have been using Sighthound for a few years, and it seems to be quite efficient in its use of storage. I use two IP WIFI cams at 480p. While they are streaming data to my system, they use about 1.2 mbs in bandwidth. (I manage my bandwidth very carefully here, BTW). I have a dedicated 1TB drive for both cameras. I just checked my storage usage, and I have about 700 gb free space(of 931 GB) on the drive. As of this moment with Sighthound, I can go back to February 12, 2016 using only about 200 GB of storage. I'd say that's pretty impressive. Sighthound also provides a very simple interface to search for activity. It's pretty much instant. I highly recommend you take a closer look at this software, albeit, the pricing for unlimited cameras is a tad high for me(experimenter/hobbyist). But you seem to be more serious about it than I, so this might be the right solution for you. Why not give SH (Free version) a try and report back to us your observations?

The cameras I use are from Axis and have nightvision, they really record 24/7 and at 1080p.
As semi-pro cameras I hope they're fairly efficient.
4TB probably would work as well but I wanted to have enough space to store the video for a while.
The reason I got them is because some people thought it would be funny to mess with my garden at night multiple times and I needed proof for the police. It was especially important that even at night I could identify their faces.
(I guess you could say I'm serious. Sadly I had a good reason to buy the equipment.)
So I'm not that much concerned about bandwidth, I set them up for maximal quality.
The search for activity you mention is one of the reasons I'm interessed in Sighthound.
I don't really need the software to install my cameras ('add cameras to the program'). I already did that myself.
What I need software for is to search for events of interest. Because looking through all the video by hand is a pain.
