Frame Rate in recorded clips

by JohnS » Sat Oct 31, 2015 12:18 pm

Hi,

Does Sighthound record clips at the sending framerate of the IP camera? I am using an IP camera set at 1080p at 30 frames per second, but when I watch recorded clips say of a car driving by, it seems like it is not even close to being 30fps. Any ideas on how fps works in Sighthound recordings?

Hello JohnS,

Does the video appear choppy or sluggish? Sighthound does save the video at 10fps, though the video should still appear smooth at this frame rate. If you could email one of your clips to [email protected] I'll be happy to investigate it to see if any other factors may be degrading the video quality.

Thanks for the response. I will find a clip and email it to you shortly.

Another question I have is this... if it only records at 10fps, should I even set my cameras to stream any higher rate than that?? Does it make a difference if I send higher frame rate feeds than 10 fps?

Hi JohnS,

Sighthound's detection and tracking doesn't become more or less accurate with higher frame rates coming in. We usually recommend setting cameras to as close to 10 fps as the camera allows as this will result in less bandwidth usage on the network.

Thanks for that info.

So I just want to confirm one last time. Are you saying then that there is NO difference whatsoever in detection and recorded clip quality in BOTH smoothness and clarity if I set my cameras at anything higher than 10fps?

If that is the case, then yes, I will want to set them to 10fps to save on bandwidth used. But I don't want to do that if it sacrifices anything at all in video quality or detection.

Please confirm. Thank you!

Hi JohnS,

That is correct - Sighthound only uses 10fps for it's detection and tracking, so if your camera is sending a higher frame rate it will not improve the accuracy. Having a frame rate lower than 10 fps will decrease the accuracy, so you will not want to go lower than 10.
