Too Resource Intensive

by shawneric » Sun Oct 04, 2015 11:06 am

I've got sighthound setup on a Windows 7 64bit box (here's my system stats as well), with five cameras on it with low resolution and frame rates. My computer goes down to a crawl. With a little investigation, sighthound is using between 70 and 100% of my CPU and RAM. I need some solutions here. I spent a lot of money on this software and it's preventing me from doing literally anything else on it.

Windows 7 64 Bit (completely updated to newest version)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33 GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR2
Motherboard: XFX nForce 780i 3-way SLI (SLI not used)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

I do know, my CPU and RAM both suck, unfortunately, I can't upgrade either of them without upgrading the motherboard, which means a completely new box.

Does anyone have any other solutions other than upgrading my box?

Hi shawneric,

The easiest ways to reduce CPU load would be to change the settings of the incoming video streams. Decreasing frame rate and/or resolution can have substantial impacts on performance. Sighthound Video only requires 10fps to function, and decreasing from 30fps to 15 or 10 means 2x or 3x less frames that must be decoded. Similarly, 1080p resolution has 2.25 times as many pixels as 720p, so slightly dropping resolution can have a substantial impact on processing as well. You'll want to make sure your camera configurations in Sighthound Video are set to "match source" to prevent unnecessary scaling.

Best,

I'm afraid this is not a viable solution. Reducing my resolution makes the video quality incredibly grainy and any identification of potential intruders worthless. If I do that, then what's the point in even having Sighthound to begin with? What I've resulted to is fully and completely killing sighthound when I'm not actively using it. I'd prefer to not have to do this, but, unfortunately, the software doesn't give me much choice.
